The Co-Occurring Specialist assumes designated responsibility to provide and coordinate substance abuse assessment, treatment planning and service delivery tailored to the individual needs of clients with co-occurring disorders of mental illness and substance abuse. Also, the Co-Occurring Specialist assumes generalist functions of providing treatment, rehabilitation, care management and support services within the team.

Position Requirements

Provide individual, family, or group counseling to persons with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health problems in community settings.

Continuously develop and implement specialized recovery care services which emphasize community reintegration.

Directly assist clients in their daily efforts to build personal recovery skills and habits for self-determination and self-reliance, including use of harm reduction model interventions.

Organize and facilitate “recovery readiness” and “relapse prevention” groups offering clients new, healthier ways to overcome recovery roadblock and develop self-esteem.

Facilitate client referral to self-help groups (AA, NA, etc.) and sponsors who are accepting of individuals with a co-occurring mental health diagnosis.

Conduct a comprehensive assessment of use of drugs or alcohol and the effects of the addiction on the individual physical, social, and emotional health.

Provide service coordination for an assigned group of clients including coordinating and monitoring the activities of the individual treatment team (ITT); assume responsibility for developing, writing, implementing, evaluating, and revising overall treatment goals in collaboration with the client and team.

Provide ongoing assessment of clients’ symptoms and response to treatment. Make appropriate changes in treatment plans to ensure immediate and appropriate interventions are provided in response to changes in mental status or behavior which put client or others at risk for harm.

Provide symptom education to enable clients to identify their mental illness or relapse symptoms.

Provide ongoing assessment, problem-solving, side-by-side skill training, supervision (e.g. prompts, assignments, monitoring, encouragement), and environmental adaptations to assist clients with activities of daily living, securing housing, and having adequate financial support.

Plan, structure, and prompt social and leisure-time activities on evenings, weekends, and holidays to improve social skills of clients.

Provide on-call crisis interventions and serve as back up after hours on rotating schedule.

Maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record in accordance with St. Luke’s policy.

Qualifications

Education/Training: Minimum Master’s degree with major course work in addiction, sociology, social work, psychology, criminal justice, theology, nursing, counseling or education; and two years’ direct service experience with substance abuse or MICA clients. CAC, CAADC, & License eligible preferred. 

Job Knowledge: A solid understanding of prevention, intervention, addiction and recovery along with specific knowledge about alcohol and other drugs of abuse; understanding of principles of mental illness, and crisis management planning.

A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record in accordance with St. Luke’s policy.
