St. Luke’s School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks an Upper School Math teacher to join its Fellows Program. The US Math Fellow will join a Mathematics Department known for the extraordinary commitment of its teachers. Whether the content is Algebra I or Multivariable Calculus, our Math teachers put students first. It’s the culture of the Department that any teacher will meet individually with any student for extra help, even if they’re not teaching the student that year. The Department uses a range of instructional methods, including direct instruction, group work, inquiry-based, and flipped classrooms; the practices in Building Thinking Classrooms inform the department’s approach. This is also a Department that embraces what Seymour Papert has called “hard fun.” The St. Luke’s Math Team participates in all Fairfield County math meets and also has social outings. Joining this Department means joining an ongoing conversation about how best to teach math, and how to do it in a way that inspires more hard fun. 

We are looking for individuals with excellent content knowledge, strong communication skills, an inherent drive to be engaged and involved, and a pronounced enjoyment of students, their lives, interests, and goals. Candidates with summer camp, coaching, or any experience in which authentic connections with students are forged are encouraged to apply.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

• Teach two or three Upper School Math classes, to be determined. 
• Meet regularly with the Fellows Director and other members of the Fellows cohort.
• Lead or support an after-school activity each season (fall/winter/spring) as athletic coaching, theater, or speech and debate.
• Serve as a Co-Advisor for 5-8 Middle School students. 
• Assist with supervisory duties, such as study hall proctoring, lunchroom supervision, detention duty, and chaperoning events outside school hours. 
• Note that all Teaching Fellows are required to attend the August Teaching Institute, held on campus August 12-16 2024.

• Background working in a Macintosh environment or ability to adapt quickly
• Bachelor’s degree or strong relevant coursework in Mathematics 
• Highly developed cultural competency skills, with a demonstrated commitment to furthering the creation of an equitable and inclusive school community that supports a sense of belonging for all students
