St. Luke's School is Hiring a Middle school english Near Canaan, CT

St. Luke’s School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12, seeks a dynamic, inspiring Librarian and English Teacher.

The St. Luke's Library resides at the heart of a 36,000-sq.ft. Humanities and Art wing that opened in September 2018, housing abundant resources including a carefully curated print collection, more than 200k e-books, a Discovery catalog, and a robust suite of databases.

The Library also includes a dedicated instructional classroom, breakout space, and an adjacent cafe, with opportunities that abound for collaboration, creativity, and camaraderie.

The Librarian will be a highly collaborative faculty partner who is committed to empowering students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.

They will have an abiding interest in evaluating continual changes in the fields of education and library and information sciences, and understand the needs of and take great joy in working with adolescents.

There will also be opportunities to teach or co-teach Middle School library classes.

The English 8 curriculum at St. Luke’s emphasizes the development of reading and writing skills, culminating in a rite-of-passage event called Declamations where each student shares a piece of creative or personal writing with the community.

Each section of English 8 meets 4 times per week for 45 minutes. Texts vary year to year, but as an example, this year students read Endangered by Eliot Schrefer;

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys; The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie; and Our Town by Thornton Wilder.

Primary Job Responsibilities :

Teach two sections of English 8. Provide inspiring, dynamic, age-appropriate lessons that prepare students for success in Upper School.

Demonstrate expertise in the collaborative design and delivery of student-led learning (especially Harkness-style discussion).

Collaborate with other 8th grade teachers to align and develop curriculum.

Help foster a culture of reading in the St. Luke’s community through programming, collaboration, outreach, reader’s advisory, and instructing the community in the use of print and digital resources.

Work closely with faculty and staff to strengthen connections between the Library program and student research, curricular content, and digital literacy needs.

Collaborate with teachers by creating units, lessons, and co-teaching classes for research support.

Create and maintain libguide resource pages, maintain databases, and assess usage.

Maintain an up-to-date, culturally diverse collection of print and non-print resources appropriate to the curriculum.

Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the Library and other school spaces.

Serve as co-advisor for a group of 6 to 8 students.

Assist with supervisory duties as needed, such as study hall proctoring and chaperoning.

Key Skills and Qualities :

Bachelor’s degree with at least two (2) years of Librarian experience required; Master’s degree in Library Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution preferred

Strong technology skills and experience with platforms such as Follett Destiny, LibGuides, Noodletools, and a variety of library management systems and databases

Experience teaching Library classes and / or English classes; Middle School teaching experience preferred

Familiarity with YA and Middle-grade literature

Positive, flexible, and collaborative colleague

Self-starter who enjoys building programs and trusting relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents / guardians

Strong cultural competency skills, with a demonstrated commitment to furthering an equitable and inclusive school community

Eagerness to develop student agency through meaningful learning experiences

Cultivates a sense of belonging in the community

Experience providing clear and actionable feedback to students, grounded in a growth mindset

Desire to continue growing professionally
