St. Luke’s Hospital Criteria Based Performance Standards, Hospital Policies, Joint Commission Regulations, and various other laws/regulations require that we assess the ongoing competency of our staff to assure that the staff maintains competency to perform their duties proficiently. Competency evaluation may include tests for knowledge, demonstration of skills and direct observation of performance.
Education And ExperienceMust be registered by ARRT in Radiography and Mammography and must be certified in BLS. Must have:
- Documented 40 hours of training specific to mammography as required by the FDA
- Documented 8 hours training in each mammography modality to be used to perform exam as required by the FDA
- Documented performance of 200 mammogram exams in the last two years as required by the FDA
- Documented 15 hours of continuing education, 3 years consecutively as required by the FDA
- Operates equipment to make clinical diagnostic images as directed by Radiologists.
- Performs routine diagnostic procedures according to established standards and practices under the direction of the Radiology Manager and Radiologists ensuring the imaging quality of the mammograms are sufficient and meets ACR standards.
- Prepares equipment and supplies. Selects appropriate exposure factors and imaging parameters. Implements safety standards and performs appropriate quality control procedures on equipment. Troubleshoots, resolves, and/or reports equipment malfunctions as necessary.
- Participates in ensuring compliance with MQSA regulations.
- Positions patient and performs imaging procedures, biopsies, and stereotactic biopsies. Analyzes images, identifies issues with the quality of images and takes action to resolve image quality issues.
- Obtains and examines the order to include patient name, date of birth, requested procedure, clinical information (reason for exam), requesting physician’s signature, date and time of order, and any other special notes or comments.
- Receives patient in a pleasant and efficient manner and thoroughly explains the procedure to be performed to facilitate cooperation and alleviate patient anxiety, including addressing all patient concerns.
- Practices patient safety by performing hand washing or using hand sanitizer before beginning the procedure. Explains to the patient that they are washing their hands for the patient’s safety. Wears appropriate PPE.
- Demonstrates an awareness of radiation safety procedures for self and others. Reviews Radiation Protection Plan Policy annually with documentation of signature and date.
- Utilizes all mammographic and radiographic equipment to perform x-rays including bone density.
