Job Summary

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Moderately heavy custodial work involving a variety of housekeeping tasks.

Essential Job Functions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Scrub, mop, wax and polish floors.
Dust and polish furniture, wash windows, woodwork, toilets, restrooms and fixtures.
Maintain stock levels as required and maintains routine records.
Shampoo carpets.
Replace burned out light bulbs.
Assist in making simple repairs to equipment or furniture.
Empty wastebaskets for disposal in dumpster.
Clean up areas around buildings.
Assist in moving files, heavy desks and other furniture.
Assist in moving offices to various sections of County buildings.
Assemble and disassemble various pieces of office equipment such as desks, chairs and file cabinets. Understand and comply with the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners employee handbook and other established policies and procedures.
Perform other job-related functions as required
Hours include evenings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Materials, methods and equipment typically used in janitorial work.
Ability to:
Understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
Make minor repairs and adjustments to cleaning equipment.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
Skills:
Basic computer skills related to email and data entry.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:. Constant walking and standing, reaching above shoulders, kneeling, bending, squatting and use of both hands and feet. Frequent bending and stooping. Frequent heavy lifting (up to 75lbs). Frequent light carrying (30lbs or less). Good balance, eye/hand coordination, near/far vision and good hearing.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Constant work inside and outside of facilities in a standing, stooping or bending posture. Some areas of the facilities have high dust levels which may cause allergic reactions.
WORK HAZARDS: Possibility of reactions to certain types of cleaners used in the course of janitorial work.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED:Rubber gloves, eye protection, face mask, rubber sole tennis shoes with good grip traction. Auto safety belt.

As a requirement of County employment, County employees are subject to being required to remain at work during an event, respond to a recall immediately following an event and/or immediately reporting to work when an all clear is declared by the County Administrator. During these types of events, County employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or possession of a state GED.
EXPERIENCE: At least one-year janitorial work, preferably in a commercial or institutional setting.
NOTE:An equivalent combination of experience/training and/or experience may be substituted to meet the above noted minimum qualifications.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
Valid Florida Driver’s License and maintain a good driving record.

Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
This is a union position.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 1 background screening.
