St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners is Hiring a SW Heavy Equipment Operator I - 00045 Near Glades Cutoff Road, FL

MAJOR FUNCTION: Daily operation of solid waste heavy equipment including but not limited to roll-off trucks, small wheel loaders, bale trucks, water wagons, and forklifts. Reports directly to the Integrated Waste Management Supervisor (Supervisor).KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS NEEDED TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
 
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of operation, safety practices and techniques as it relates to heavy equipment and baling and conveying equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of the operational requirements of the landfill equipment including recommended procedures for inspecting and maintaining the equipment.

Abilities:
  • Able to communicate effectively with subordinates and superiors, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to read comprehend and implement various technical manuals and regulations in order to maintain the equipment and operation in compliance with service manuals and operational policies.
  • Must be able to perform all activities without extensive supervision.
  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION: 
  • Maintains operational procedures within the Landfill site.
  • Keeps Supervisor informed of all potential safety or operational problems concerning solid waste and possible solutions in a timely manner such that corrective action can be determined.
  • Must maintain accurate maintenance logs, equipment walkaround reports, inspection reports, and records for submission to Landfill Administration Office. 
  • Responsible for performing and documenting a safety and maintenance inspection on each piece of equipment prior to and after operation (equipment walkaround). 
  • Responsible for cleaning/removing debris that becomes entangled or lodged into or around tracks, axles or behind wheels. 
  • Responsible for cleaning/removing debris from interior of equipment cab and cleaning windows to improve visibility, as needed. 
  • Must be able to identify, monitor and report operational problems of equipment being operated and conditions at the Landfill. 
  • Must also respond to (Supervisor) on special requests in a timely manner when required. 
  • Performs related work as requested or assigned. 
 
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES: During emergency conditions, all County employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. County employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Must have full manual dexterity in both hands and feet. Good hand/eye coordination, vision and hearing with or without correction. Must be able to sit, walk, and stand for extended periods. Must be able to wear protective clothing. Operation of trucks and all heavy equipment outlined in the Solid Waste Division Heavy Equipment Operator Step Program specific to Solid Waste Heavy Equipment Operator (SWHEO I) is required. Very frequent lifting of 30 pounds or less, frequent lifting of 30 pounds or more, some lifting of 50 pounds is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. 
 
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to function in air-conditioned vehicles and outside at various sites around the Landfill in all weather conditions. Must also be able to move from one environmental condition to another frequently.

WORK HAZARDS: General occupational hazard of being around heavy equipment, working in/around the Baling and Recycling Facility site, in a solid waste industrial environment, and in all elements (heat, dust, rain, garbage).

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: Safety glasses, gloves and coveralls used as needed. Safety shoes are provided one (1) time a year for this position.EDUCATION: Requires a High School Degree or acceptable equivalency diploma. 
 
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience in daily operation of heavy equipment required. Other training or related experience may be considered on a year-to-year basis.
 
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION: Valid Florida’sDriver’s License and must maintain a good driving record. Pay Grade T07
 
Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
 
This is a Union Position
 
PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 1 background screening.
