MAJOR FUNCTION: This is technical and supervisory work in land surveying in connection with construction projects and field surveying.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:
Function as chief of survey party and runs profiles and cross sections.
Procures field data necessary for the preparation of plans.
Establish line and grade for construction work.
Supervise work of survey crew.
Take field notes and makes sketches.
Contact interested public and explains work progress and programs as needed, records work and sketches in field books.
Train survey crews on all phases of work.
Read maps relating to land surveying.
Make field corrections and computations as needed.
Set grades for construction in all County right-of-way.
Check water elevations throughout the County.
May be required to make field inspections of construction drainage problems and checks proposed street grades and drainage plans.
Understand and comply with the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners employee handbook and other established policies and procedures.
Perform other job-related functions as required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Knowledge:
Knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of land surveying.
Knowledge of the instruments used in land surveying.
Knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry and its application to field surveying.
Knowledge of general construction specifications and plans.
Ability:
Operate surveying instruments in the performance of duties.
Reduce and plot field notes.
Ability to make field and office computation with the aid of hand held calculator.
Interpret engineering specifications.
Ability to lay out, direct and supervise the work of the field survey crew.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES: During emergency conditions, all County employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. County employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Good physical condition, must be capable of lifting 50 pounds. Must be capable of walking long distances. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Must work under a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold and heat. Must be capable of working in difficult terrain such as swamps, canals, ocean, rivers, forest, and high traffic areas.
ENVIRONMENTAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Must know how to swim. Should have good eyesight and hearing.
WORK HAZARDS: Working in or around heavy traffic areas. Working
in or around water bodies and forested areas. Possibility of insect bite and snake bite.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: Safety vests, proper footwear for the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, including courses in geometry and trigonometry, supplemented by specialized training in land surveying.
Four years’ experience as a survey instrument man. A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION: Valid Florida’sDriver’s License and must maintain a good driving record.
