Knowledge: 

• Principles, practices and techniques of public recreation. 
• Rules of instruction in the fundamentals of a variety of team and individual sports. 
• Knowledge of departmental rules, regulation and procedures.

Abilities: 

• To instruct and develop interest in recreation activities, and promote good sportsmanship. 
• Enforce facility rules and regulations. 
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all age group participants and the general public as well as fellow employees. 
• Ability to conduct a variety of sports and games. 
• Ability to work with and supervise children. 

Skills

• Basic computer skills related to date entry and email. 

 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION: 

• Organize and supervise recreation activities such as team games and sports, music, dance, arts and crafts, cultural arts, and social recreation.
• Assist with the coordination and implementation of summer camp programs and field trips. 
• Interpret recreation programs to the public 
• Introduce new program activities, equipment, and material to staff. 
• Cooperate with other organizations in conducting community-wide and special events. 
• Maintain discipline on indoor and outdoor play areas. Enforces recreation center rules and regulations. 
• Oversee activities of semi-skilled employees and lower level Recreation Supervisors.
• Officiate at team games and sports events. 
• Maintain good sportsmanship on the part of players and spectators alike. 
• Must be able to produce reports, flyers and memos using a computer. 
• Perform related work as requested or assigned. 
• Work may include weekends, nights and/or varied schedules. 

 
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Constant walking, standing, use of both hands and fingers, and legs, very frequent light lifting (30 lbs. or less), frequent heaving lifting (up to 75 lbs.). Frequent light carrying (30 lbs. or less) reaching above shoulders, kneeling, bending and squatting. Good hand/eye coordination and near and far vision. Good hearing. 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Frequent work outside under adverse weather conditions of heat, cold, humidity and rain. 

WORK HAZARDS: Inherent risk of injury while participating in physical activity. 

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: Auto Safety Belt

EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or possession of a state GED.

EXPERIENCE: Two years’ experience in recreation education, physical education or related field. 

LICENSE CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION: Must have a valid Florida driver's license with a good driving record.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 2 background screening which includes fingerprinting.
