St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners is Hiring a Pool Lifeguard -000010 Near Parks, FL

**MULTIPLE POSITIONS AVAILABLE**
**This is a seasonal position, scheduled to work from
 ****May 2024 to August 2024***

MAJOR FUNCTION: Serves as lifeguard at county-owned and operated aquatic facilities. Responsible for public safety and welfare of the general public using aquatic facilities.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS NEEDED IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of water safety techniques and standard lifeguard tasks. 
  • Knowledge of approved water rescue methods and first aid techniques. 
  • Must possess good swimming and safety skills.

Abilities and Skills: 

  • Ability to care for and maintain aquatic facility area, and other related equipment.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
  • Ability to learn rules and regulations of the pool facility.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedules to include evenings, weekends and holidays. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Pool Lifeguard

  • Perform emergency water rescue techniques; administers standard first aid, CPR, AED or oxygen when necessary.
  • Ensure general safety and maintains cleanliness and appearance of aquatic amenities, to include pool area, restrooms and showers for public use.
  • Communicate with the public and responds to their needs.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends and holidays.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

  • Pool Lifeguard duties, as well as conducts water safety instruction, swimming lessons, health related aquatics classes and lifeguard duties at county-owned and operated aquatic facilities.
  • Provide water safety education to general public, including health benefits and safety training. Prepare and submits reports on a regularly, scheduled basis. 
  • Perform related work as requested or assigned.
  • Training and proper utilization of personnel assigned.
  • Work is performed on a full-time or part-time basis.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedules to include evenings, weekends and holidays.

WSIs must have thorough knowledge of water safety instruction, lifeguard techniques and maintenance of aquatic facilities.

Must beskilled in water safety and swimming initiative, creativity, perseverance and the ability to inspire others. 

Must be able to instruct swimming lessons and to perform as a lifeguard. 

Basic computer knowledge related to email and data entry.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Good hand/eye coordination. Good vision and hearing with or without correction. Use of both hands, fingers and legs with dexterity. Very frequent light lifting and carrying (30 lbs. or less) and frequent heaving lifting (up to 75 lbs.), reaching above shoulders, kneeling, bending and squatting. Constant walking and standing in an outdoor environment. Ability to sit for long periods of time. Ability to perform physical demanding work and maintain high levels of physical fitness and agility and skills competency.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Constantly working outside under adverse weather conditions of heat, cold, humidity and rain. Routine work in the sun (sunscreen will be provided). 

WORK HAZARDS: Work with chemicals i.e. soda ash, chlorine, muriatic acid used to maintain pool and rest rooms. Exposure to ultra-violet rays (sunscreen will be provided). 

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: Ring buoy, shepherd’s crook, whistle, trauma bag (first aid kit, AED, oxygen cylinder, gloves, biohazard bags, etc), rescue tube, back board, handicap lift.

EDUCATION: Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age. 

EXPERIENCE, LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS: Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record. If you do not possess a driver’s license, you must sign the County approved agreement that a County vehicle will not be driven during employment.

Pay Grade is by Tier:

Starting Rate (No Certification): $15.78 Per Hour

No current lifeguard certification or experience required.

Select applicants must pass a swim test: (1) Swim 300 yards continuously using each of the following strokes for at least 100 yards using front-crawl and breaststroke. (2) Swim 20 yards, feet first surface dive in a minimum of 7 feet of water to retrieve a 10-pound object. Bring object to surface, then swim on back 20 yards with object on chest and jump onto the pool deck within a minute and forty seconds. (3) Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.

Candidates must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent and Advanced First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment.

  • After ARC Lifeguard Certification: $16.25/hour, American Red Cross Shallow Up to 6’ Lifeguard Certification.
  • Employee Eligible for: 2% for every certification associated with position i.e. Water Safety Instructor etc. and 3% for each returning season up to 5 seasons of connecting years without changing positions.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 2 background screening which includes fingerprinting.
