An employee in this job class is responsible for instructing recruit and continuing education training classes. The employee is also responsible for the supervision of a basic recruit class. Work is performed under general supervision of the Director and Basic Training Supervisor of the St. Louis County & Municipal Police Academy. Work involves a high degree of organizational skill and ability to instruct blocks of instruction on a wide variety of law enforcement topics along with supervisory and interpersonal skills.

This position will remain open until filled.
Per the Crime Laboratory’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, new hires with no experience shall start at the base of corresponding pay range for their position. 
  • Perform drill and ceremony with recruit classes. 
  • Instruct individual blocks of instruction for recruit and continuing education classes. 
  • Assist other instructors with training duties. 
  • Maintain, clean, and repair training equipment including firearms.
  • Prepare for instructing classes. 
  • Maintain and prepare lesson plans for blocks of instruction. 
  • Schedule guest instructors for blocks of instruction. 
  • Instruct or assist instructing firearm classes.
  • Provide supervision and direction to recruits in basic training.
  • Monitor, evaluate, grade, and correct recruit performance and behavior on written and/or practical exams and assignments.
  • Perform related work as required.

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to hot and cold outdoor temperatures.

  • Ability to work with little supervision handling multiple assignments and tasks.

  • Ability to use basic computer hardware and software including user level knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to use telephones and telephone message systems along with basic office equipment such as copiers.
  • Ability to use specialized computer equipment (scanners, projectors).
  • Knowledge of various types and makes of firearms and the ability to use them proficiently. 
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and tasks.
  • Ability to solve complex problems.
  • Above average knowledge of criminal law and law enforcement practices.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new knowledge and concepts.

Training and Experience:

Required: Baccalaureate Degree from any accredited college or university and have a minimum of five (5) years of previous or current experience as a police officer in order to obtain certification as a Generalist Instructor in accordance with Title II Missouri Department of Public Safety, Division 75 – Peace Officer Standards and Training Program, Chapter 4 – Certification of Instructors (11CSR75-4.0140). An Instructor with less than a Baccalaureate Degree must have a two (2) year Associates Degree and eight (8) years of previous or current police experience or a High School Diploma and ten (10) years of previous or current police officer experience.

Special Requirements:

Completion of a forty (40) hour course that will be scheduled by the Academy and must be completed within the first year of original certification as an Instructor.

AGE REQUIREMENT: Eighteen (18) years of age at the time of appointment.RESIDENCY: No residency requirement. Must be a citizen of the United States or must possess a valid work permit and must submit an application for United States citizenship when eligible.EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Educational requirements and skills will be determined by the position classification.ARREST RECORDMust be free from conviction of a Felony. A Class "A" Misdemeanor conviction will be cause for immediate dismissal from the process, unless otherwise directed by the Chief of Police.MILITARY: Must not have a "Dishonorable"discharge or"Bad Conduct" discharge if having served in the military. All "Other Than Honorable"discharges will be reviewed on an individual basis.
