St. Louis County, MO is Hiring a Police Forensic Technician - DNA Unit Near Clayton, MO

An employee in this job class is responsible for performing professional scientific work of moderate difficulty assisting in the analysis of physical evidentiary material to aid law enforcement officials in criminal investigations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Crime Laboratory Section Supervisor. Work includes exposure to bodily fluids, toxic chemicals and noxious odors.

Per the Crime Laboratory’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, new hires with no experience shall start at the base of corresponding pay range for their position.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists with analytical tests and examinations on a wide variety of crime evidence.
  • Operates laboratory instruments including extraction robots, quantitation (RT-PCR), PCR and capillary electrophoresis (CE) instrumentation.
  • Performs critical reagent checks on newly received reagents and DNA testing kits.
  • Logs reagents and supplies into the Chemical Inventory Management System and Qualtrax.
  • Remains current in the field of forensic science by reviewing scientific journals, attending seminars, conferences and professional organizations.
  • Successfully completes proficiency tests annually to the extent appropriate if assisting with casework.
  • Performs related work or other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of laboratory methods, techniques, equipment and materials.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemistry and biological sciences.
  • Skill in operating laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in performing tests and analyses of a variety of substances and materials according to generally prescribed procedures.
  • Ability to activate and deactivate the Police Crime Laboratory security system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with law enforcement officials, attorneys, medical examiners and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate in English clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Training and Experience
:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree (AA/AS) in biology, chemistry or forensic science related field of study.

Special Requirements
:
Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate the Mobile Crime Laboratory Vehicle. There is a two-year probationary period for newly appointed Forensic Technicians. Failure to complete all training requirements and competency testing after 24 months of employment in the probationary position could result in dismissal.

Additional Information

CITIZENSHIP: Citizen of the United States or valid work permit, and apply for citizenship when eligible.
AGE LIMITS: Eighteen (18) years of age at the time of appointment.
EDUCATION: Educational requirements and skills will be determined by the position classification.
ARREST: Must be free from conviction of a felony or a Class "A" misdemeanor.
MILITARY: Must not have a "Dishonorable" discharge or "Bad Conduct" discharge if having served in the military. All "Other Than Honorable" discharges will be reviewed on an individual basis.

Employees hired for full time employment will participate in the St. Louis County retirement plan where they contribute 4% of their salary to the defined benefit plan with vesting after 7 years. In addition to these benefits, as of January 1, 2023, St. Louis County approved up to 480 hours of paid parental leave for eligible employees welcoming new children, either by birth or adoption. The employee can also take up to 80 hours of leave for prenatal care and up to 80 hours for care of the child within the first year.
