Job Summary/Scope
Administers the day to day shift operations of the Fire Department. Organizes, direct and supervises the activities of all fire companies on assigned shift. Through effective and efficient use of human and material resources protect the lives and property of citizens from fires and other hazardous situations by mitigation of emergency incidents. Directs and coordinates the operation of a division through subordinate supervisors. Assists the Fire Chief in preparation and execution of the departmental budget.
Supervisory Responsibility
Integral to the position of Battalion Chief is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting, and, if necessary, disciplining.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Administers the day to day operations of the fire department.
Directs and supervises daily activities of fire suppression as assigned.
Responds to fires and other emergencies to direct and supervise department forces in stabilization and mitigation of the incident. On scene risk/life safety manager of all personnel and city equipment.
Schedules all annual leaves, holidays. Maintains attendance records, daily rosters and employee performance evaluations for all members of their shift.
Coordinates and assists in developing training programs for new recruits and refresher training for all personnel.
Prepares and presents all necessary records and reports in a timely manner.
Coordinates with other division supervisors to schedule necessary training, equipment repairs and other activities while maintaining an adequate and available fire fighting force within the constraints of the assigned work force.
Assists Fire Chief and Asst. Fire Chief in planning and executing departmental budget and new programs.
Participates in fire cause and origin determination and post fire analysis.
Interacts directly with other Municipal, State and Federal agencies.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Participates in the development of departmental policies and procedures.
Promotes the Fire Department through various media sources and speaking engagements.
Participates in the development and critique of apparatus specifications and vendor bids.
Serves as acting Fire Chief during any absences as assigned.
Serves as emergency scene public information officer.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skills in supervision, report writing, record keeping, resource management and stress management.
Knowledge of management and supervision techniques, hazardous materials and EMS protection methodologies.
Knowledge of modern fire suppression and protection methods and techniques, modern fire suppression equipment and apparatus, personnel management techniques, building construction and fire behavior.
Skills in problem solving, decision making and leadership. Must be able to think and act quickly and rationally in stressful and emergency situations.
Skills in interpersonal communications. Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Valid driver’s license required.
Minimum of 11 years experience in fire service required with experience in fire suppression and protection, including five years of combined qualifying time as Captain
Must meet “Qualifying Standards” as specified in Article 20 - E of Working Agreement with Local 77.
Material and Equipment Directly Used
Daily driving of assigned vehicle. Frequent wearing of air pack, basic fire fighting in exercise of fire scene management responsibilities. Uses a variety of hand tools. Daily use of personal computer with various software applications, heat sensors, gas detectors, communication devices such as cellular phone and radio. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work frequently speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Education
High School Diploma required. Associate’s degree in Fire Science, Business or Public Administration desirable.
Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
