Responsibilities

Job Summary

  • The Oncology Educator is a Registered nurse with advanced preparation in the area of Clinical practice. 
  • The Oncology Educator is responsible for ensuring Quality Nursing Care for the patient diagnosed with cancer.
  •  This responsibility includes utilization of specialized advanced Clinical Nursing skills and knowledge in a relatively independent fashion in the area of direct and indirect Patient Care consultation and education of patients families and staff.
  • The Oncology Educator exhibits evidence of knowledge of Nursing Theory Principles and Procedures and demonstrates skills and good judgment in application of these principles in the clinical setting. 
  • As a recognized expert the Oncology Educator acts as a mentor to the nursing staff providing consultation and education.
  •  The Oncology Educator is responsible for the ongoing review revision and management of staff clinical competencies. 
  • Further the Oncology Educator is responsible for conducting competency evaluations and for coordinating opportunities to match staff learning needs with patient care needs. 
  • The Oncology Educator is responsible for facilitating organizing planning and in some case directly providing classes and educational opportunities that will support the successful completion of Oncology Nurse continuing education requirements. 
  • The Oncology Educator does not assume responsibility for an assigned case load of patients but is required to maintain clinical competence by working directly with nursing staff in the assigned patient care areas on a routine basis. 
  • The Oncology Educator is also available throughout the organization as a resource to the nursing and ancillary staff and assists with organizing hospital-wide clinical skills day if needed. 
  • As such the Oncology Educator may be called upon to assess a particular patient/family need and assist with development of an appropriate plan of care. 
  • The Oncology Educator participates in the development and coordination of specialty programs/service and maintains certification where appropriate. 
  • The Oncology Educator is responsible for the coordination of quality improvement activities and/or research studies as directed and approved by the organization. 
  • The Oncology Educator is involved in quality improvement activities surrounding the hospital Joint Commission Certifications Sepsis care and other key quality of care initiatives. 
  • The Oncology Educator participates in hospital and specific Cancer committees that involve clinical quality improvement and is responsible for bringing the information back and educating the staff at the bedside so quality of care goals are achieved. 
  • The Oncology Educator will be available to orient new nurses providing one on one at the elbows clinical hands-on patient care training. 
  • Due to the nature of assigned departments being operational 24/7 the Oncology Educators schedule will vary so all staff have access to the Oncology Educator and the Oncology Educator has the opportunity to reach each staff member individually as needed.
  • The Oncology Educator is responsible for knowing the mission values and philosophy of the organization and is accountable for ensuring these are considered as programs studies and/or protocols are developed.
  • The Oncology Educator is responsible for maintaining excellent communication and interpersonal relationships and may interface with patients or families who have concerns regarding the care they are receiving or have received during their hospital stay. 
  • The Oncology Educator is accountable for effectively and positively promoting the units assigned Administration and the goals of the organization. 
  • This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of the Organization.

Qualifications

Experience Education LIcensure Special Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years acute care experience in combination of ICU, medical-surgical and telemetry.
  • Graduate of a school of nursing. Bachelors degree in nursing.
  • Current RN licensure in the State of California.
  • Current CPR cert required Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) within 6 months of hire. Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certified
  • ACLS Preferred
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills. Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles and teaching skills. 
  • Ability to articulate and apply quality improvement and nursing research principles.
