Description:

Incumbent serves as Security Officer for the St. Joseph Probate Court/Juvenile Justice Center, responsible for providing security at the entrances to the facility, internal security, perimeter security, and parking lot security.


Essential Functions:

HOURS & EMPLOYMENT: This position is a part time position. The regular schedule will include five (5) hour days, four (4) days per week. This position may include some weekend and evening hours.

DIRECT REPORT: The Security Officer reports directly to the Director of Security.

DUTIES:

Security Staff is responsible for providing security at the entrances to the facility, court security, internal security, perimeter security, and parking lot security. Some transportation of detainees to local facilities may also be required. Investigation of incidents within the facility and the filing of reports to the Director of Security may be required. The following are representative of some duties and responsibilities of the Security Officer, but are not limited to these duties alone:

1. Provide security at the two public entrances to the facility.

2. Operate the magnetometer.

3. Check all bags and purses.

4. Operate the security booth at the main entrance.

5. Check in weapons from law enforcement officers.

6. Make regular security sweeps of the public portion of the facility.

7. Make regular security sweeps of the complete exterior of the facility.

8. Provide security assistance to staff leaving the facility at night.

9. Respond to security needs in the parking lot or on the grounds of the facility.

10. Provide security during transportation of juveniles when requested.

11. Transport juveniles to other facilities when requested.

12. Work with local law enforcement and fire department during emergencies.

13. Work with the County Police Department for Court Security.

14. Identify security needs for the facility and report to the Director of Security.

15. Inspect magnetometers and or X-ray machines to make sure they are in working order.

16. Investigate incidents as required in non-secure parts of the facility and file reports.

17. Check and maintain all county vehicles that are driven by staff. 

18. Escort detained juveniles when authorized. 

19. Observe drug screens as needed.

 20. Transport Central Academy and Day Reporting students to and from home and school. 

21. Provide court room security. 

22. Provide assistance in detention as needed or required. 

23. Any and all duties as assigned.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Works closely with all people employed by the Court and who work in the Juvenile Justice Center. Has a major role in the interface with the public who use the facility. Must maintain a professional relationship with all staff, juveniles, parents and the community at large.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This facility is in operation 24 hours a day every day of the year. Special deputies are responsible for the safety of the public and the staff who work in the facility. The safety of the community as well as our staff and other detainees depends on the ability of staff to react quickly, fairly, consistently, and with control. Inaccurate assessments could significantly impact the health and well-being of the community, detained juveniles, and facility staff.

Work is performed on brick pavers and on carpeted floors. There will be a considerable amount of walking to various parts of the facility and around the facility.

Duties will require some amount of physical fitness with regard to personal protection and when necessary, in the restraint of a disruptive person or detainee. Mobility to be able to handcuff and subdue an aggressive person will be required.

Qualifications: 

EDUCATION: Continuous education in the area of security and investigation is required. A minimum of a High School Diploma is required. Training and certification in the area of law enforcement is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Experience in the field of Law Enforcement, security, investigations or related field is preferred. Must be 21 years of age.

SKILLS: This position is a people intensive position. Positive interaction with individuals entering the facility is required. This position requires the ability to stop, search, and direct people. The Security Officer must have a valid driver’s license. Additional skills:

1. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, detainees, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

2. Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.

3. Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

4. Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with violent/irate individuals.

5. Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instruction and present findings in oral or written form.
