Reports to: Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs

Primary Purpose

The Dean is responsible for the leadership, development, assessment, and administrative oversight of the programs, services, resources, personnel, and policies of the College’s library and tutoring units. The dean is responsible for all aspects of providing departmental services and resources to SJR State students, faculty, staff, and authorized user groups at SJR State’s campuses, off-site locations, and online.

Description of Duties and Tasks

1. Ensure quality library and tutoring (herein, unit) services and resources are provided to SJR State students, faculty, staff, and authorized user groups at all College campuses, off-site locations, and online through effective use of personnel, acquisitions, and technology.

2. Coordinate all aspects Learning Resources development and provision; directs and engages relevant department faculty and staff in the development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of unit services, programs, and resources.

3. Plan, manage, and administer the budgets for unit staff and resources; manage the acquisition and administration of unit resources including digital learning resources.

4. Supervise department faculty and staff; manage unit organizational structures, schedules, and allocation of job responsibilities for effective operations; approve leave for unit employees and submit monthly payroll form for full time employees; submit position vacancies, recommend hires and dismissals; evaluate staff annually and faculty as dictated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

5. Develop, implement, and publish policies, procedures, and guidelines governing department programs, services, and operations in accordance with College procedure; review relevant sections of the College Catalog/Student Handbook, Operating Guidelines and Procedures Manual, and Board Rules annually or as directed.

6. Define and review, in collaboration with faculty, staff, and College administration, the mission, values, vision, and scope of units; use external metrics and benchmarks and internal measures to engage in the ongoing assessment of unit services and resources to ensure the provision of quality services and resources; formulate and evaluate annual goals and objectives for each unit in consultation with relevant faculty and staff using data procured by the College and the department.

7. Ensure compliance with College and programmatic accreditation standards addressing library services and resources, tutoring, and other academic support services that fall within unit scope; provide relevant documentation to program administrators as needed.

8. Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations regarding the accessibility of SJR State’s online library and tutoring resources; fulfill state and federal reporting requirements.

9. Serve as the College representative to relevant governing bodies regarding unit affairs within the Florida Virtual Campus, the Division of Florida Colleges, and the Council on Instructional Affairs.

10. Manage the College’s participation in state and national library consortia, agencies, and organizations to exploit resource sharing and group pricing/licensing opportunities.

11. Communicate with faculty regarding available Library and academic support resources and services; foster consultation and coordination efforts with teaching faculty from all disciplines and departments in the develop and assessment of department services and resources as appropriate.

12. Develop and maintain Learning Resources LibGuides as needed; manage faculty duties for LibGuides creation and maintenance; submit College web site, social media, event calendar, and creative services requests to Strategic Communications.

13. Collaborate with the department of Learning Culture and Innovation to provide unit related faculty training and awareness campaigns, programming, resources, and support for recognized observances and College events, and development of interdepartmental initiatives.

14. Maintain knowledge of copyright law as it pertains to use of materials in higher; ensure students and employees are provided copyright education as indicated in the College Catalog/Student Handbook and the College Operating Guidelines and Procedures Manual; serve as the designated Copyright Agent for the College in keeping with Board Rule.

15. Participate in the College governance process by serving on committees and task forces as assigned and contributing to ongoing institutional effectiveness and strategic planning efforts.

16. Perform other duties as assigned by the College Administration.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Knowledge of current issues and developments in librarianship and tutoring including copyright, accessibility, intellectual freedom, and assessment.

2. Understanding of and commitment to the community college mission.

3. Demonstrated record of service to the profession.

4. Ability to limit span of control to area of primary purpose, deferring to the Chief Academic Officer any concerns outside the span of control.

5. Knowledge of legal requirements and ethical tenets regarding privacy of library user data; ability to maintain confidentiality of all library transactions, library records, and student records in keeping with College policy, the State of Florida, and federal legislation.

6. Strong oral and written English language skills; ability to communicate professionally and effectively.

7. Proficiency in or ability to learn relevant computer programs including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Banner, and Chrome.

8. Ability to maintain a professional, cooperative, working relationship with all College personnel and representatives of external agencies and institutions.

Qualification Standards

Education: A master’s degree in a library-related field from an ALA accredited institution or a master’s degree in education is required. An additional advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.

Experience: Significant and progressive experience in the administration and management of an academic library or learning commons required. Experience in collection development preferred.

Strong commitment to the philosophy, role, and mission of a comprehensive community college. This is a full-time 12-month on-site administrative position.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $76,235.00 - $101,012.00 per year
