St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is Hiring a Librarian - Main Library Branch Near St. Augustine, FL

St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Full Time Reference Librarian for the Main Library of the St. Johns County Public Library System. This position works 40 hours weekly including Sundays.

SJCPLS encourages a love of literature, the arts, and lifelong learning by providing a variety of information, resources, and entertainment to the community. SJCPLS serves all areas of St. Johns County, including St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fruit Cove, and Hastings. The Library System has six branches, two bookmobiles, and offers books-by-mail service. In addition to books, periodicals, and online databases, SJCPLS offers computer access, notary services, Inter-Library Loan, access to a Seed Library, test proctoring, and many volunteer opportunities. The Library System also offers a dynamic range of programming for adults, teens, and children. 

Employees work in a team-oriented environment and are responsible for assisting with library circulation, reference, youth and adult service areas. 

The ideal Reference Librarian candidate must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Assists in the collection of monthly usage statistics.
  • Resolves patron questions, concerns, or complaints.
  • Responsible for subject/genre collection maintenance; provides Interlibrary Loan and reference services.
  • Responsible for supervisory duties including training staff and volunteers and acting as the Person in Charge on occasion.
  • Provides reader’s advisory, reference and general information to patrons of all ages; provides assistance and instruction regarding the use of databases, catalogs, and computer applications.

Candidates for the Reference Librarian are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science.
  • Must have knowledge of professional library principles, methods, practices and materials as they apply to public service work.
  • Sufficient experience to understand basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
