Position Overview and ResponsibilitiesSt. John’s Prep seeks a teacher of English for grades 9-12. The Department of English offers a program that “engages students in the challenge to acquire the skills necessary for successful communication: reading, thinking, analyzing and writing. Through literature, writing assignments and class discussions, we seek to introduce students to the issues and ideas that will help them to explore their own identity and the nature of the world around them” (St. John’s Prep website). Prospective candidates should have the competency and passion to engage every student in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. Candidates should also have a desire to become an active and collegial member of a community of adult learners. We seek candidates who are open and willing to embrace a student-centered digital learning model that incorporates education technology tools, open education resources, and varied instructional strategies.Education and ExperienceA minimum of 1-3 years of teaching English at the high school level.A bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in English or related field.Ability to work effectively with a diversity of learning styles and learners.Physical Requirements: (with or without accommodations):Standing/sitting for long periods of time.Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person, on the telephone., or on video calls.Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, play equipment, and perform first aid and CPR.Specific vision abilities required include close vision and distance vision.All members of the faculty are expected to give witness to the Xaverian and Catholic mission of St. John’s Preparatory School by acting as servant leaders capable of modeling and actively promoting Xaverian and Catholic values. In addition to classroom teaching responsibilities, we encourage all members of the faculty to be involved in the life of the school beyond the classroom through a wide range of co-curricular, intramural, and interscholastic programs.
