Job Title : Sonographer 1

Location: St Dominic Hospital - Jackson, Mississippi

Job Summary : The Ultrasound Tech performs diagnostic sonographic examinations utilizing ultrasonic equipment to locate, evaluate and record critical physiological, pathological, and anatomical data. Working under the guidance of Lead Sonographer or above produces Ultrasound images to aid in the diagnosis of medical problems. The ultrasound technologist monitors and ensures safety of patient and staff. Performs patient screening by using established protocols. Utilizes departmental policy to perform safe operation of equipment and in all functions of the job. Provides complete pre and post education to patients and family. Reports to Supervisor or Manager.

Job Requirements:

Education: Graduate from an accredited school of sonography or completion of an ultrasound program.

Licensure: Board Eligible: American Registry of Diagnostic Sonography , ARDMS, Basic Life Support, BLS-HCP

Work Experience: General and Vascular experience required. Sufficient previous experience in a radiology department and in ultrasound technology preferred.

  1. Job Function :
    1. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, etc. Performs all ultrasound techniques and examinations, abdominal scans, retroperitoneal scans, obstetric and gynecology scans, radiation therapy localization for treatment planning and minor surgical procedures. Maintains records of examination data and other pertinent information on patients. Develops film through automatic processing. Assists physician in administering medicines as required. Schedules cases to coordinate with other patient examinations. Assists physician in such procedures as needle biopsies, amniocentesis, renal biopsies, etc. Scans patients, marks patient's body, determines angle for puncture, assists as necessary, maintains sterile technique. Positions and transfers patients comfortably. Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis. Selects and operates equipment as directed. Secures and returns supplies such as film, linens, medicine, patient folders. Maintains darkroom chemistry levels in replenishment tank. Performs radiographic examinations. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, Inservice meetings and workshops. Attends meetings as required. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
    2. Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty. Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Transferring, repositioning patients. Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeing, and crouching for patient care functions. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required. Optimal auditory acuity required. Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties. Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment. Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests. Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty maybe irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
