General Definition of Work:
Responsible for monitoring the health of all shelter animals, and providing care and treatment as needed. Ensures all animals in the shelter receive appropriate medical care. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director.
Example of Duties: Essential Functions/Typical Task
Performs thorough intake evaluations and vaccinations on all animals entering the shelter, triage observed and report health concerns, communicates with contracted veterinarian for treatment plans. And administers daily medication when needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic veterinary treatment of domestic animals in a shelter environment; experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective, and humane manner, knowledge of contemporary clinic and / or shelter maintenance techniques and accepted sanitary practices; strong animal handling skills and knowledge of animal behavior; good interpersonal, communication, and time management skills; strong team mentality; independent decision-making skills; effective written and verbal communication; ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction; maturity, good judgement, and a professional personal appearance; attention to detail; able to work in a busy, demanding environment; ability to treat people and animals with respect; public relations beneficial to the shelter and its programs; comfortable making decisions or recommendations concerning euthanasia; comfort and ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical and other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with internal staff, other County employees, County officials, and the public; professionally and effectively handle difficult situations with the public, communicate effectively orally and in writing.
REQUIRMENTS:
Illinois Certified Euthanasia Technician or ability to attain certification in six months
Must be a St. Clair County resident and 18 years or older
Must have a valid Illinois Driver License
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Experience as a Veterinary Assistant is strongly preferred
One year working experience working with an animal shelter is preferred
Must be able to pass drug test and pre-employment verification. St. Clair County has a COVID mandate. Proof of vaccination required upon employment.
Must be dependable; regular attendance is required
Must have the ability to lift 100 pounds with assistance
Task may risk exposure to adverse environment conditions such as diseases, noise, odors, wetness, toxic chemicals, and animal bites and scratches
