ST. CHARLES HEALTH SYSTEM JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: Pulmonologist REPORTS TO POSITION: Clinical Division Director Medical Specialties DEPARTMENT: SCMG Pulmonary Medicine Clinic DATE LAST REVIEWED: November 30, 2023 OUR VISION: Creating America’s healthiest community, together OUR MISSION: In the spirit of love and compassion, better health, better care, better value OUR VALUES: Accountability, Caring and Teamwork DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY: The SCMG Pulmonary Medicine clinic addresses the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of pulmonary disorders. The clinic serves patients impacted by many conditions, including but not limited to: ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, and lung cancer. The clinic providers work closely with other specialties within SCMG, external referring and consulting providers, and with hospital departments. POSITION OVERVIEW: The SCMG pulmonologist provides consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Pulmonary Clinic, and in the inpatient setting at SCMC – Bend for Pulmonary Medicine. In this role, the physician will demonstrate excellence in all facets of patient care and meet or exceed compliance standards, while diagnosing and treating conditions of the respiratory system, including the lungs, bronchial tubes and chest areas affected by conditions of the airways. Physician will perform bronchoscopy, Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) and thoracentesis procedures and interpret PFT and pulmonary exercise testing. Work schedule: Physician will work minimum of 40 hours per week with a minimum of 36 hours patient contact time. This will generally be 4, 10-hour days scheduled as a blend of hospital rounding, procedures, and scheduled clinic visits. Call expectation: Physician is expected to participate in the clinic call rotation which is shared equally by all physicians in the pulmonary clinic. Physician is also expected to participate in the inpatient hospital pulmonary call rotation which is divided by all pulmonary physicians in the community with hospital privileges per the medical staff bylaws. Work location: Physician’s primary work location will be the SCMG pulmonary clinic in Bend, Oregon. Physician will be expected to participate in outreach rotation to SCMG clinics in Redmond. Other outreach locations may be added as patient and business needs dictate. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: (May perform additional duties of similar complexity within SCHS as required or assigned) Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents. Document all patient care in the proper form and in a timely manner in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory agencies. Be familiar with the SCMG organization structure, communications systems and billing process, completing billing and coding documentation within time assigned by SCMG administration. Behavioral Expectations: Fosters an atmosphere that produces positive provider and staff morale and provides guidance and accountability for staff members regarding professionalism, ethics and respectful behavior. Participates in creating intentional relationships and puts a high level of focus on attitudes and behaviors that enhance the care experience. Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests. Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. Maintains working knowledge of standards in accordance to the American Thoracic Society and assists the organization in maintaining compliance with all applicable clinical and administrative standards. Practice and role model excellence in the pulmonary care domains of diagnosis, aligning treatment goals to patient values, definitive treatment, supportive care treatment, follow-up care, promote good health and prevent illness. Clinical Expectations: Physician will perform bronchoscopy, EBUS and thoracentesis procedures, interpret PFT, nocturnal oximetry, pulmonary exercise testing and provocative lung testing when indicated. Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams and identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status. Performs advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation, including but not limited to: chest tubes and thoracentesis. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans and monitors effectiveness of plan of care. Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate. Responsible to diagnose and treating conditions of the respiratory system, including the lungs, bronchial tubes and chest areas affected by conditions of the airways and associated conditions of other systems. Practice and role model excellence in the pulmonary care domains of diagnosis, aligning treatment goals to patient values, definitive treatment, supportive care, follow-up care, promotion of good health and prevention of illness. Practice of medicine within the scope of license, training, and credentialing. Collaborate with other members of the pulmonary care interdisciplinary team and referring providers to ensure a high-quality patient experience. Inpatient pulmonary consultations when on call for inpatient services. Perform inpatient bronchoscopies for non-ICU inpatients for diagnostic purposes Outpatient thoracentesis Calculates dosages and administers medications accurately in accordance with SCHS policies and procedures for medication administration. Delivers first-rate customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, and is timely, efficient and accurate, and courteous. Keep medical knowledge and skills current through regular CME activity. Must attest to having obtained 60 hours of Category 1 continuing medical education (CME) relevant to the practitioner’s current medical practice over the prior two-year period of work. Keep all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted. Maintain active privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties. Increase understanding and collaboration throughout the medical community regarding provider’s chosen specialty. Participate in SCMG physicians meetings and assist in policy formation for SCMG and Physician’s practice. Provide a therapeutic presence in service to others by purposefully responding to the needs of patients/customers in a caring way. This includes introducing oneself and stating your purpose, asking the patient their preferred name, spending time with the patient to determine their care goals, active listening, and using skillful communications (appropriate touch, eye contact, etc.). Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the health system’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violations of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all health system’s investigations and proceedings. EDUCATION Required: Graduation from an accredited medical school. Successful completion of an accredited residency program in pulmonary medicine. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION Required: Oregon license as MD/DO Board certified or eligible in Pulmonary Medicine. To be board certified or qualified to sit for the boards in primary area of practice at the Hospital. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven years of residency or fellowship training. Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements. Maintain unrestricted DEA number. Maintain unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs. Current BLS and ACLS certification required. EXPERIENCE Required: Completion of a Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship Preferred: Two or more years active practice in Pulmonary Medicine PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely. GENERAL Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent SCHS. Strong team working and collaborative skills. Ability to multi-task and work independently. Attention to detail. Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel and Access), database management, and document preparation. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Continually (75% or more): Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level. Frequently (50%): Sitting, standing, walking, lifting 1-10 pounds, keyboard operation. Occasionally (25%): Bending, climbing stairs, reaching overhead, carrying/pushing or pulling 1-10 pounds, grasping/squeezing.
