Description

Objective: To support students with different learning needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Partner proactively with faculty and administrators to support students with learning differences. Observe and evaluate individual students displaying academic or behavioral difficulties and assess their strengths and challenges.
  • Participate in classroom instruction as needed and collaborate with teachers on best practices to meet students’ needs in the classroom.
  • Direct one-on-one and small-group instruction utilizing a variety of teaching methods to meet the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Develop and write student accommodation/learning plans with long-term goals and specific objectives.
  • Provide regular written student progress reports to the school and parents/guardians with assessment results and recommendations of diagnostic testing and remedial programs for learning-related issues.
  • Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and assessments.
  • Initiate and schedule parent conferences as needed.
  • Recommend in-school and community resources for identified students.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians to recommend professionals, particularly academic tutors, outside the school and coordinate services to support students.
  • Coordinate and facilitate communication between students, families, faculty, administrators, and other involved professionals.
  • Oversee and secure accommodations for qualifying students.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the lower school as well as the middle and upper school learning facilitators and serve on the student support services team.
  • Attend and contribute in full, divisional, departmental, and team faculty meetings.
  • Take an active role in professional activities and attend relevant professional meetings and conferences.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advances in specialized instruction.

Work Environment: This job operates in a professional school environment.

Position Type: This is a full-time position with teaching responsibilities from August May. As with any independent school, faculty should be ready to chaperone class trips, perform typical day-to-day duties such as lunch and carpool duties, and engage fully in all school events that develop the student.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required. Master’s degree in dyslexia therapy, special education, or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Orton-Gillingham certification required.
  • Certified Academic Language Therapist certification preferred.
  • Responsive classroom training and experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of learning difficulties, especially ADHD, dyslexia, and dual language learners.
  • Knowledge of child development, learning disabilities, psycho-educational tests, reports, and assistive technology.
  • Knowledge of administering and interpreting assessments and test results, academic achievement, and diagnostic testing.
  • Full understanding of differentiated instructional strategies across the curriculum.
  • Represent the school in the larger community in a positive manner that reflects the values of the school.
  • Ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and parents/guardians.
  • High degree of cultural competency and demonstrated commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Professional written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite required.
