JOB TITLE: RN or LPN Supervisor

SUPERVISOR: Director of Nursing

The Nursing Supervisor, under the supervision of the Director of Nursing Services or the Assistant Director of Nursing Services, shall assist in the management of the Nursing Department, ensure that a sufficient number of competent personnel are available for each shift to meet the daily nursing needs of residents, and
supervise assigned personnel to ensure that nursing care services are being provided in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the D.O.N. and/or the A.D.O.N. in making any necessary adjustments in nursing services operations that shall ensure the continued ability of the Nursing Department to provide quality services and continuity of care on behalf of residents and their families.
  • Meets with staff under his or her supervision, on a regularly scheduled basis, to communicate information, and to identify and correct problem areas.
  • Responsible for administering all Personnel Policies and Procedures in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Periodically monitors assigned personnel to ensure that they are:
  • - following established safety management policies and procedures in the use of equipment and supplies- participating in all fire safety and disaster preparedness drills in accordance with policies and procedures- following established infection control/bloodborne pathogens standard procedures- following established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Supervises and evaluates work performance of staff.
  • Submits Accident/ Incident Report forms to Human Resources no later than twenty-four (24) hours after the incident, along with any investigative reports or actions in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Attends, participates in, and completes all mandatory in-service education/training as required.
  • Makes daily rounds to ensure that staff refer to the individualized resident care plan prior to administering daily care and adhere to the plan in providing services.
  • observe residents’ general physical and emotional condition assess resident care and the clinical environment and makes changes and/or improvements in procedures assess resident and family satisfaction with the care and services.
  • Communicates and problem-solves with resident’s family and staff. Reports appropriate problems/issues to Director of Nursing and/or delegate.
  • Checks staffing assignments and makes necessary adjustments. Attempts to find replacements for call-offs.
  • Addresses quality assurance issues with staff.
  • Checks building security and alarm system.
  • Answers and directs incoming calls when receptionist is off duty (when available).
  • Gathers information from 3- 11pm staff to be related to RNAC for care plan.
  • Does chart audit and paperwork assignments as requested.
  • Provides direct care as needed.
  • Acts as a charge nurse and performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Exercises leadership abilities, as well as skill in working with staff. Sets goals for team members.
  • Demonstrates and practices standards of conduct in the areas of quality of care, human resources, compliance with laws, communication, and confidentiality.
  • Observes and practices Infection Control and Standard Precautions in accordance with St. Andre Health Care Campus standards.
  • Observes and promptly reports equipment safety hazards or defective/malfunctioning equipment or supplies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of fire drill and all other emergency preparedness plans.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to issues of fraud and abuse.

  • Utilizes equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Observes and promptly reports equipment safety hazards or defective/malfunctioning equipment or supplies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of fire drill and all other emergency preparedness plans.
  • Adheres to the policies and procedures set forth in the Personnel Handbook.

Qualifications:

Education: Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Is a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and is currently registered or Licensed with the State Board of Nursing in Pennsylvania.

Training/Experience: Keeps updated in the field of nursing by attending, meetings, conferences, workshops and reading current literature pertaining to all aspects of resident care, rehabilitation and staff development. Must have one year of geriatric nursing experience.

Job Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of general and geriatric nursing theory and practice including that basic knowledge related to nursing, such as: drugs, biological, physical, social and medical sciences and their application for better understanding of resident-care problems. Thorough knowledge of principles and methods involved in in-service instruction of nursing and auxiliary personnel, in demonstrating techniques and methods of resident care services, and in instruction of resident needs.

Physical Demands: Good physical and mental health. Finger and hand dexterity to handle and manipulate instruments and equipment. Visual and aural acuity to detect changes in resident condition.

Special Demands: Must have a genuine interest in geriatric nursing and the promotion of resident independence and personal dignity. A sincere interest in promoting the upgrading of nursing practice. Willingness to work with realization that errors and incompetence may have serious consequences for residents.

Be aware of kind, sympathetic, understanding behavior when dealing with residents, families and visitors. Must realize importance of all of the Resident Bill of Rights especially the right to privacy and strict confidentiality of all personal records, medical history and information pertaining to that resident.

Memory for details, ability to pay close attention to physician’s orders; take, transcribe and accurately implement all orders as intended, in the proper way according to nursing practices and facility policy. Understands the value of economy. Ability to maintain good working relationships among staff supervised.

Working hours will vary to insure adequate supervision of all shifts.

Working Conditions:

Works in well-lighted and ventilated rooms. Subject to minor cuts and burns. May be exposed to residents having communicable diseases. Possibility of strains due to moving residents or equipment, or injury from irrational residents.
