Reports To: Assistant Programmatic Services Director

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Assistant Head Start Director, the Nutrition Coordinator will ensure proper compliance to all regulatory statutes for USDA Childcare Food Program and Head Start Nutrition Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Administration

  • Processing of caterer invoices for payment.
  • Conducts inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies.
  • Confers with supervisor about staff to hire, disciplinary action, and promotion of food service staff.
  • Supervises the processing of all weekly food orders from each center.
  • Participates in bidding and purchase arrangements for produce, meats, groceries, and catering vendor.
  • Recommends needed changes with vendors for quality or cost improvement.
  • Monitors Head Start Program sites for compliance with Head Start Performance Standards. Works closely with the CAA Nutrition Services Coordinator or designated staff to ensure that children identified with health related nutrition problems receive appropriate therapeutic meals.
  • Works closely with the Nutrition Consultant and supplies him/her with all needed documentation.
  • Ensures that a note from the physician or parent is available to support all special diets.

USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program

  • Ensures the proper preparation and serving of food in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the completion of USDA Child Care Food Program Applications.
  • Receives food in accordance to established policies and procedures checking temperature and taste. If there is a problem with the food, notify the catering company and the Supervisory Administrator as soon as possible.
  • Administers the Child Care Food Program (CCFP) for the agency.
  • Prepares and submits the USDA Child Care Food Program grant application.
  • Monitors application for accuracy, and income eligibility.
  • Completes the monthly claim for reimbursement report.
  • Develops and implements procedures to ensure that USDA requirements are met.
  • Monitors sites to ensure that CCFP regulations are complied with e.g. adequate portions are served, menus followed, documentation of number of meals served.
  • Provides training to food service and St. Alban’s staff on USDA Child Care Food Program.

Food Disbursement

  • Works alongside the Food Service Worker in the preparation and delivery of meals to the classrooms.
  • Works alongside the Food Service Worker in the cleanup of the kitchen.
  • Prepares nutrition activities at least twice per month for the classroom teachers.
  • Ensures that all centers are in compliance upon inspection by the Department of Children and Families and Department of Health. If there are items that are out of compliance, ensure they are corrected as soon as possible.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Contract Management

  • Monitors caterer service for compliance with contractual agreement.
  • Supervises the follow-up of all occurrences of non-compliance with vendors.
  • Ensure that there is documentation of each incident of contract non-compliance.
  • Make sound decisions and recommendations in resolving vendor non-compliances.

Housekeeping

  • During down time (i.e. no children onsite) the position may be asked to assist the housekeeper and maintenance persons with the cleaning of the school.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of management principles, practice and procedures uses in large-scale food production and applicable lows, rules and regulations pertaining to food management operations.
  • Knowledge of current materials, equipment, utensils, and methods used in large-scale food preparation and services.
  • Knowledge of cost, purchase methods and economic planning practices in food service planning and established nutritional standards.
  • Knowledge of operation regarding all standard equipment typical of a large institutional kitchen.
  • Knowledge of health precautions necessary in large-scale food preparation and service and sanitation requirements.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high moral.

Experience and Training:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in the food service industry.
