Springfield Public Schools is Hiring a Grounds Maintenance Worker II - Full Time - Facilities Near Springfield, OR

Any employee hired throughout the 2021-2022 school year will receive retention incentives throughout the year in up to $500 increments (not to exceed $1,000 per year), based on hire date and full-time/part-time status.  Position Summary

The Grounds Maintenance Worker II position performs work in the maintenance, care, and modification of District grounds and landscapes which include the operation of electrically- powered tools or equipment in planting, cultivating, trimming grounds and landscaping. Provides work direction to Grounds Maintenance employees with less experience.

Essential Functions

Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs grounds and landscape maintenance duties including, but not limited to, mowing, transplanting, planting, pruning, weed control, tree/shrub trimming, leaf clean up, tree removal, fertilizing, and preparing sites for landscaping.
  • Apply mulch, playground chips, rock and rock type material as directed.
  • Maintains and ensures the upkeep, repair, and improvement of all school properties.
  • Maintains and repairs sports turf fields.
  • Completes appropriate logs, forms and paperwork as needed.
  • Transports equipment, materials and supplies to work sites.
  • Prepares work and inventory records/reports as needed.
  • Ensures accurate accounting and safety measures/security for tools and equipment used at work sites.
  • Keeps walk ways, parking areas and entrances clean and clear of debris.
  • Operates hand and power tools and other equipment at job sites and performs routine maintenance on tools.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles including, but not limited to, mowers, trucks, cranes, and back hoes.
  • Prepares marking of sports fields, conditioning soil, and renovating turf as directed.
  • Performs irrigation installation and repairs as directed.
  • Installs and repairs sports facilities such as backstops, bases, and painting of play surfaces and equipment as directed.
  • Installs and repairs fencing and playground equipment.
  • Snow and ice removal.
  • Cleans job sites at the end of the work day ensuring a safe environment for stakeholders.
  • May provide work direction to other staff as assigned (I.E. seasonal and temporary).
  • Other related duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) AND
  • One (1) year experience or equivalent combination of education and Certificates, Licenses, Registration & Other Requirements
  • Must hold a valid Oregon Driver’s
  • Must be able to obtain and hold an Oregon Class B Commercial Driver’s Licence (CDL) by the end of the probationary
  • Ability to obtain herbicide spraying
  • Ability to complete SafeSchools training/certifications
  • Ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR

 Desired Qualifications

  • Related experience in an educational

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (May be acquired through education, training, and/or experience.) Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; gas, electric and hand tools associated with grounds keeping; landscaping diseases and insect damage; associated landscape chemicals used in fertilizing and weed control; safety and first aid practices and procedures.

Skills to: read and understand instructions as well as directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, appropriately identify and eradicate landscape disease and insect damage; fertilizers and similar products used in grounds keeping; orient and operate grounds maintenance, tools, equipment, and machinery.

Ability to: understand and apply District and school policies and procedures; maintain appropriate work attire; maintain regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality, as set forth in Board policy; greet stakeholders; provide information pertaining to area and/or District/School policies, procedures and other pertinent information; operate maintain and arrange for repair various landscape / maintenance equipment; identify landscape disease and insect damage; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work and from diverse backgrounds; interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, parents, and community members and resolves conflict in a professional manner; maintain records; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; utilize appropriate grammar and spelling when corresponding, make mathematical calculations accurately; follow oral and written instructions; accurately research various information and prepare related reports.

Work Direction, Lead & Supervisory Responsibilities:

No assigned permanent staff to supervise. May train and provide work directions, as directed by supervisor, to appropriate staff and volunteers.

Physical Effort:

Requires the ability to lift and carry grounds keeping supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis, prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on a daily basis. Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual, electrically-powered and/or gasoline-powered

grounds keeping equipment and machines. Requires the ability to access facilities and areas which may only be accessible by climbing stairs or by climbing ladders to a height of 20 feet. Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as the work is performed primarily outdoors, year round. Employees in this job title are designed as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when the District is closed due to severe weather.

Working Conditions:

Scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemical compounds for application on trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, and grasses which may be hazardous and cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, application, use and disposal/storage are not properly followed.
