Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Maintenance Mechanic performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment equipment. Assignments are carried out in accordance with standard trade practices and general work instructions. The employee will perform scheduled preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance on mechanical and electro-mechanical machinery and equipment. The employee will also perform minor vehicle maintenance and repairs. Work is performed independently, but under the direction of the higher level Maintenance Mechanic, Superintendent or Director. Ensures that all interactions with peers and public are handled in a professional and courteous manner.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of Maintenance Mechanic Helper.
  • Tour treatment plant and pump stations to check equipment, pumps and instrumentation to ensure proper working order; respond to requests to inspect equipment problems; evaluate, diagnose, and repair routine problems.
  • Replaces and repairs component parts according to a prescribed maintenance schedule.
  • Replaces packing/seals, wearing rings, bearings, etc. in plant equipment. Determines malfunctions of machinery and performs emergency repairs to ensure continuance of wastewater plant operations.
  • Performs minor duties of an electrician as related to plant and pump station controls.
  • Performs minor vehicle maintenance, repairs, and type 7 vehicle inspections.
  • Performs arc and/or gas welding and cutting of different types of metals.
  • Performs plumbing and pipe fitting tasks.
  • Installs and sets up new equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance and repairs on buildings, structures, and grounds.
  • Keeps maintenance and repair logs on all machinery and equipment.
  • Instructs and directs work of Maintenance Mechanic Helper.

Qualifications


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work in a safe manner and encourage the same from co-workers. Thorough knowledge of Springettsbury Township Wastewater Treatment Facility machinery and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical principals involved in operation of pumps, speed reduction gearboxes, blowers, compressors, and other wastewater equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety standards and procedures in treatment plant environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of pump station maintenance and repair practices. Thorough knowledge of Springettsbury Township department rules and procedures. *
  • Skill in the proper use of hand tools, machine tools, and other equipment commonly used in the repair wastewater plant machinery and equipment.
  • Operate cutting torch and welding equipment.
  • Operate for the purpose of maintenance; light and heavy equipment, including tractor, mower, dump truck, wheel loader, farm tractor, and skid loader.
  • Ability to cooperate with coworkers on group tasks.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, drawings, specifications; including layouts, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Ability to adhere to safety standards and recognize safety warnings and hazards. Ability to understand, communicate and carry out written and verbal instructions effectively in English.
  • Ability to compute and record statistical data.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and regulatory guidelines. Ability to effectively interface with computers and computer controlled operating systems.
  • Ability to organize tasks to meet appropriate time schedules required.
  • Ability to lift light to heavy weight objects (up to 50 lbs.).
  • Ability to demonstrate clear vision and sound hearing to avoid possible hazards, including plant equipment, vehicles, and road equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate physical fitness, including standing and walking for long periods of time, frequently going up and down stairs, bending, reaching and lifting.
  • Ability to report to on-call services.
  • Attends all general training as required.
  • Attends training courses designed to maintain a valid Pennsylvania Class E Type 4 Wastewater Operator Certification.
  • Ability to regularly report to the job at the assigned times and perform assigned duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Any combination of education and experience that indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein.
  • A minimum of two years experience in the maintenance and repair of a wastewater treatment facility or other commercial/industrial setting. A minimum of two years experience in arc/gas welding.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES

  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class E, Type 4 Wastewater Operator Certification or higher as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification. This certification shall be obtained within 12 months of the employee being eligible to take the certification test. Failure to obtain the certification in the required time frame will result in release from employment.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsement within 24 months of employment. Failure to obtain this license will automatically result in release from employment.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Type 7 Vehicle Inspection License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to provide own tools (see attached listing of Tools Required to be Provided by WWT Maintenance Mechanics)
  • Ability to pass physical/medical tests, including functionality test.
  • Ability to pass drug-screening test.
  • Ability to pass psychological exam.
  • Ability to pass background investigation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may involve conditions that can only be partially controlled and expose the employee to raw sewage and sewage sludge. Work is frequently performed alone and may be performed inside and/or around noisy equipment or outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Work is performed around a variety of potentially hazardous mechanical and electrical equipment and occasionally around hazardous substances. Work is performed on a permanent schedule, but may require working after normal work hours, weekends, and/or holidays in emergency situations.
