Reports To: Executive Director of Athletics and Coordinator of Athletics
Location: Athletic Department and middle school and high school campuses and other venues as assigned

Classification: Professional

Primary Purpose: The Assistant Sport Medicine Facilitator’s duties, enumerated in this document, should not be considered all inclusive. The Executive Athletic Director or designee, as necessary, shall modify duties. The Assistant Sports Medicine Facilitator will be present at in-season athletic contests and practices and shall attend other pre-season, post-season and off-site contests as directed by the Executive Athletic Director or designee. The Assistant Sports Medicine Facilitator is a district-based (not campus based) position that requires the ability to travel to different campuses regularly and work with different coaches and administrators.

Qualifications/Skills:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Licensed by the Texas State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers.
  • Certification must meet requirements for becoming and remaining qualified for this position in a manner required by Federal and/or State law.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Applied Knowledge: Assistant Sports Medicine Facilitators must have knowledge about a large range of medical problems. Assessment and evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be needed.
  • Decision-Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • Attention to Detail: should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situations when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff and families.
  • Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to work on multiple campuses/locations and multiple grade-levels (high school and middle school) as assigned.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties:

  • Assist in establishing and maintaining an effective Sports Medicine training program for high school and middle school athletics district-wide.
  • Provide first aid and injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning for SBISD student-athletes.
  • Assist with the coordination of the annual required athletic physicals and supervise the clearance of injured student-athletes prior to and during the sport seasons on a district-wide basis
  • Assist in maintaining medical and insurance records within a designated feeder pattern middle schools and high schools.
  • Establish a working relationship with a designated team physician and community physicians.
  • Maintain a line of communication with the District Athletics Administration staff, team physician(s), coaches, and parents regarding athletic healthcare and recommended treatment/rehabilitation for all athletic injuries.
  • Maintain athletic training facilities for the treatment of student-athletes.
  • Participate in training, drills and review of emergency action plans with coaches and teams.
  • Assist coaching staff in implementing sport specific/injury prevention programs and methods.
  • Maintain communication with parents and coaching staff on the care and treatment of their student-athlete.
  • Communicate with the physician, coaching staff, the student-athlete and his/her parents, and campus administration as needed.
  • Participate in the coverage schedule for all high school and middle school athletics, as needed including working with the Executive Director of Athletics or designee on district-wide athletic training coverage for middle school and high school sports
  • Maintain a daily treatment log.
  • Maintain adequate medical records on all injuries and rehabilitation procedures.
  • Equip each team, district-wide, with appropriate medical equipment.
  • Work with the coaching staff and student-athletes in the proper fitting of protective equipment, including special taping, pads, or braces.
  • Maintain a safe environment by monitoring and supervising student-athletes and student-trainers under their care.
  • Develop coach’s professional development for CPR/AED, Concussion, Heat Illness, and Sudden Cardiac Death.
  • Assist in certifying SBISD staff in CPR and First Aid.
  • Maintain first aid, CPR/AED and Concussion certificates on all coaching staff members.
  • Maintain required professional development to stay in compliance with state law.
  • Onboard current staff with new policies/procedures.
  • Onboard new staff members.
  • Administer an athletic training student-trainer program in accordance with the school’s clubs and activities guidelines and state law.
  • Participate in the annual meeting of the Concussion Oversight Team as required by state law.
  • Participate in the development of the Sports Medicine Facilitator meeting as scheduled.
  • Participate in meetings to relay information to staff, identify problems, and discuss solutions.
  • Participate in the annual certification of all sports medicine equipment.
  • Participate in the development of the student trainer workshop and any other T-2-4 sports medicine vertical alignment activities in collaboration with other sports medicine facilitators.
  • Assist in creating and implementing district-wide student athletic trainer minimum educational standard curriculum.
  • Develop, refine, and implement policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services.
  • Work with other sports medicine facilitators in the development of Rank One components.
  • Establish daily hours of operation for the athletic training facility district wide.
  • Participation and involvement in any facility changes in sports medicine areas.
  • Maintain a budget and inventory for athletic training supplies/equipment.
  • Assist with the central training rooms and stock them as needed.
  • Order athletic training supplies and equipment through the Executive Athletic Director or designee.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Athletics or designee.
  • Assist Executive Director of Athletics or designee with weather-related safety plans.

Other:

  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Athletics or designee.
  • The Assistant Sports Medicine Facilitator will work in accordance with a weekly schedule to be determined by the Executive Athletic Director or designee. Weekly schedules will vary according to the athletic season.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Equipment Used: Computer, ACTIV Board, copy machine and audiovisual machines.

  • This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.

  • Moderate lifting up to 100lbs maximum and carrying.

  • Occasional prolonged or irregular hours.
  • Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned.

Environmental Factors:

  • Work for continuous or extended periods exposed to, but not limited to the sun, heat, cold, poor weather conditions, and excessive noise (intermittent); periods of constant noise.
  • Dust, fumes, smoke, or gases.
