Spotsylvania County Public Schools is Hiring a Maintenance Tech III: Kitchen Equipment Technician Near Fredericksburg, VA

Job Summary:
With little to no supervision, under the direction of the Director of Maintenance, Supervisor of Maintenance, or HVAC Department Head maintain, repair, and install food service (kitchen) related equipment and HVAC systems as required throughout the district and other duties as assigned for the efficient operation of the Maintenance Department. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all food service (kitchen) systems in district facilities. This equipment includes but is not limited to Walk-in freezers and medium temperature boxes, reach-in boxes, Ice machines, ice cream boxes, meat slicers, can openers, combi ovens, flat top grilles, steam ovens, & steam kettles.

Essential Job Functions:
• Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of food service equipment (kitchen) and refrigeration systems.
• Install new food service equipment (kitchen) and refrigeration equipment and systems when required.
• Relocate and expand existing food service equipment (kitchen) and refrigeration systems as required.
• Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
• Fabricate, assemble, and install electrical wiring, controls and piping according to specifications and code.
• Wire and connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
• Maintain refrigerant dispensing records to meet federal requirements.

• Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all food service equipment (kitchen) and refrigeration equipment, including changing of filters and cleaning condensers and coils.
• Perform all scheduled preventive maintenance and cleaning on all food service (kitchen) and refrigeration equipment as needed.
• Locate and repair gas leaks in equipment and main gas lines.
• Receive and complete work orders.
• Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
• Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
• Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
• Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
• Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
• Detect needed repairs on equipment following established inspection procedures.
• Respond to emergency calls as needed.
• Performs trade related and unrelated duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Lead Electrician):
• Profound knowledge of how various types of kitchen and refrigeration equipment work
• Outstanding soldering and blazing skills, applying oxygen/acetylene
• Strong ability to read and comprehend wiring diagrams, and to follow manuals on operation and installation to successful complete tasks
• Should have knowledge of propane and natural gas fired appliances.
• Should also have a strong knowledge of propane and natural gas piping to insure all fuel gas codes are meet with new and existing piping.
• Strong ability to apply various types of equipment safely and efficiently, and to maintain and service them
• Exceptional ability to work independently without direct supervision and take responsibility for the repair of assigned equipment
• Strong ability to prioritize assigned tasks for increased job delivery
• Exceptional ability to properly investigate problems with food equipment, discover the issue, and correct it
• Ability to work in a team setting with other maintenance workers, and also with staff and members of the public
• Strong ability to quickly understand and carry out both written and oral instructions effectively
• Strong keyboarding and computer skills
• Possess refrigerant transition and recovery certification (universal)

• Repair and maintenance experience in the commercial kitchen or dinning service field
• Strong knowledge of plumbing repair and installation practice and procedure
• Strong knowledge of the fundamental of commercial refrigeration practice and theory.
• Expert ability with using a multi-meter and other diagnostic tools or test equipment for troubleshooting electrical circuits, appliances, motors, or basic control devices like overloads, relays, contactors, transformers, starter relays, Etc.
• Knowledgeable of maintenance department budgetary practices and principles.
• Capable in estimating time and materials.
• Above average proficiency in both verbal and written communication.

Education and Experience Required (Kitchen Equipment Tech)
A high school diploma or equivalent and 5-years of progressively responsible work experience in the HVAC trade; or completion of a four year technical training program and 3-years of direct work experience in kitchen equipment maintenance and repair; or any combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Associate’s Degree in Refrigeration preferred but not required.
Special Requirements:
• Physical ability to carry (75 lbs.) field equipment, traverses difficult terrain, and maneuvers in around congested mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, above ceiling and attics spaces and climb ladders to access and service rooftop equipment.
• Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Hold and maintain a Master’s level mechanical trade license in the State of Virginia.
• Acquire and maintain any other federal or state mandated certification(s) needed to uphold the requirements of this job.
• Basic computer skills with a working knowledge of MS Office product software.
