Job Summary: 

Maintenance Engineers perform advanced general maintenance or work within one or more specialty areas, including undertaking the construction and renovation projects on school division buildings as directed. Daily functions may include ordering and purchasing building and maintenance materials.

Essential Job Functions 

  • Performs advanced general maintenance on/within school division buildings under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical cables, circuits, and related electrical/mechanical equipment, such as fire alarms, clocks, and security systems.
  • Examines buildings on a regular basis to ensure equipment is operating efficiently.
  • Establishes and recommends priorities on repair projects. 
  • Makes minor and major building repairs as directed
  • Runs and maintains all mechanical, emergency and building equipment
  • Keeps inventory of all resources and supplies on hand, and requisition replacements on appropriate forms far enough in advance to ensure timely delivery that will not hinder the maintenance of the building
  • Complies with the local codes and ordinances pertaining to building construction
  • Works cooperatively with others, including other maintenance staff, to effectively carry out the goals of the department
  • Assists with removing snow, during inclement weather, from parking, including unloading sand and rock salt
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess the required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • The Maintenance Technician is expertly skilled in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of commercial electrical appliances and fixtures with instant ability to recognize and categorize problems and provide solutions for both single phase and 3-phase electric power.
  • The Electrician must have a comprehensive professional knowledge of commercial electric service for analyzing, supervising, installing or repairing all things electrical for K-12 schools and support buildings.
  • The Electrician must have a thorough understanding of complex series and parallel electrical circuits related to potential line voltage and low voltage problems.
  • Capability to read and interpret complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics and to read or develop riser diagrams.
  • The Electrician must have fundamental knowledge of fire and security alarms as notifier equipment; interior and exterior lighting and low voltage lighting, electronic theater controls, Rauland Telecenter VI, ICS school communications systems and wiring circuits for commercial kitchen equipment.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of wiring solutions for installation of new electrical circuits for example; metal-clad, PVC, EMT and rigid conduit, wire mold used for data and power and moisture resistant (MR) cabling.
  • Electrician is required to measure, cut, thread, and bend EMT and rigid conduit piping using hand and power tools, pipe cutters, pipe-threading and pipe-bending tools. Commercial experience with bending rigid and EMT conduit pipe in accordance with theBenfield Conduit Bending Manual, 2nd Edition is necessary.
  • Perform wiring on newly installed appliances as dishwashers, water heaters, commercial kitchen equipment, interior and exterior light fixtures, pumps, scoreboards, sound systems, lighting controls and a variety of K-12 classroom educational equipment.
  • Expert ability with using a multi-meter and other diagnostic tools or test equipment for troubleshooting electrical circuits, appliances, motors, or basic control devices like overloads, relays, contactors, transformers, starter relays, Etc…, .
  • Knowledgeable with regards to maintenance department budgetary practices and principles.
  • Expert knowledge of current NEC, NFPA and the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and other applicable codes, standards and regulations governing the electrical trade.

Education and Experience:

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current (valid, non-expired) Driver’s License
  • Seven (7) years of experience working in a trade (HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing) or as a maintenance technician, ideally within a public school system or other Educational setting

Special Requirements:

  • The employee must pass a yearly physical and participate fully in the drug/alcohol screening program.
  • This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies

Employment Terms: Employment may be offered as a 12-Month (Day 243), full-time position. The work schedule for this position is 7.5 hours worked per day, excluding lunch. This position is evaluated annually.
