Position Title: Associate Director of Community Belonging
Reports To: Director of Learning, Engagement, and Belonging
Summary: The Associate Director of Community Belonging develops, implements, and evaluates creative programs for the community that relate to the Museum’s collection, exhibitions, and strategy. Through community belonging initiatives, the Associate Director will continue building meaningful relationships with community members and partner organizations to help build bridges between the Museum and the community and serve as a Museum liaison. This individual will have a professional practice that has been informed by meaningful community engagement, particularly with communities impacted by inequities such as economic, racial, social, environmental, and/or systematic injustice. This position reports to the Director of Learning, Engagement, and Belonging but works closely with all members of the Learning, Engagement, and Belonging team and departments across the Museum. The Community Belonging programs at the Speed already have several established, well-regarded programs and this is a great opportunity for someone passionate about the mission of the Speed and impactful community work.

The Speed Art Museum is committed to hiring talented individuals who share in the vision of discovering the joy and power of great art. Position Highlights:
  • Lead the development of initiatives and programs within the Learning, Engagement, and Belonging Department (LE&B) department to support the vision for community belonging at the Speed Art Museum
  • Collaborates with Director of Learning, Engagement, and Belonging to design and manage departmental initiatives in line with the institutional strategic plan, related to community belonging.
  • Represents the LE&B Department and the Speed in leadership and community capacities as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Membership department to develop, implement, and evaluate the Speed for All membership program.
  • Serves as a liaison and collaborates with Louisville-area constituencies, regional communities, and civic/community partners to develop partnerships that successfully bridge the Museum’s mission and specific community needs.
  • Attends meetings and collaborates with the Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging (EIB) Community Working Group.
  • Develops, implements, and manages Community Connections projects and exhibitions, collaborating with LE&B, Curatorial, Guest Experiences, Facilities, Marketing and Communications, and other Museum departments.
  • Develops evaluation tools to measure, document, and report on the impact of community belonging programs on participants, other Museum guests, and the community.
  • Manages the Community Connections Artist-in-Residence and related projects, currently focused in the Russell/West of Louisville neighborhoods, mentoring and serving as point-of-contact for the selected artist, helping to shape the scope of their workshops and final project, and supporting their collaborations with LE&B and other Museum departments.
  • Develops and manages budgets for community belonging programs.
  • Supervises Community Belonging Coordinator(s), volunteers, and interns.
  • Collaborates with teammates in LE&B, along with EIB, Marketing and Communications, Membership, Curatorial, and other Museum departments to encourage further participation and deepen relationships and mutual learning opportunities between participants in community belonging programs / partner organizations and all Museum departments and programs.
  • Collaborates with teammates in LE&B and Curatorial departments to incorporate community belonging into interpretation initiatives for the Museum’s collection and special exhibitions.
  • Collaborates with teammates in LE&B, along with EIB, Marketing and Communications, Membership, Curatorial, and other Speed departments to develop events. Some events occur during evening and weekend hours.
  • Attends cross-departmental planning meetings to learn about exhibitions and special projects that inform program development and community belonging.
  • Collaborates with Philanthropy Department to track and complete funding reports, identify fundraising opportunities, and secure funds for existing community belonging projects and new initiatives.
  • Collaborates with Philanthropy, Marketing and Communications Departments to develop materials for grants, advertisements, press coverage, and other promotional materials.
  • Maintains accurate attendance figures, statistics, images, program calendars, and files.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in art education, art history, museum education or equivalent or alternative degree in social work, public health, with experience leading community art education
  • Management experience, minimum 3 years. Experience running community engagement programs and initiatives required.
  • Five years’ experience working with art museums, non-profits, or other community organizations.
  • Experience leading art-making workshops with children and adults preferred.
  • Experience working collaboratively and creating mutually beneficial partnerships required.
  • Ability to become proficient with museum specific software including Altru by Blackbaud.
  • A flexible schedule is required including night and weekend availability.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently and keep track of numerous projects simultaneously; be flexible for interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Presents a professional image in work attire and demeanor.

Working Environment:

  • This position supervises the Community Belonging Coordinator(s).
Physical Requirements:
  • Extensive use of telephone and computer throughout the workday.
  • Sits, reaches, walks, climbs, and lifts intermittently throughout the workday so the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Communicates using English language.
  • Sees, hears, or uses prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that this position's requirements can be fully met.
  • Able to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., of twenty-five (25) pounds throughout the workday.
  • Able to adapt to and work from various locations so the requirements of this position can be fully met. Transportation required.
  • Willing, as necessary, to work beyond normal working hours, on weekends, and remain accessible when away from the Museum so this position's requirements can be fully met.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • This is a full-time exempt position. This position is NOT eligible for overtime pay
