Job Description:

The incumbent would diagnose and treat patient with issues concerning teeth, gums and other parts of the mouth. They will provide advice and instruction on maintaining good oral health and on diet choices that affect oral health.

Essential Functions:

  • Reviews patient’s medical record, including allergies, problems, medications, and dental history.
  • Elicits and records information about patient’s medical history.
  • Examines x-rays of teeth, gums the jaw and nearby areas for problems
  • Remove decay from teeth and fill cavities
  • Repair and/ or remove cracked or fractured teeth.
  • Straighten teeth to correct bite issues
  • Place sealants or whitening agents on teeth
  • Give anesthetics to keep patients from feeling pain during procedures
  • Determines and prescribes medication, dosage, and schedule given the patient’s condition and allergies.
  • Make models and measurements for dental appliances, such as dentures, to fit patients.
  • Teaches patients about diet, flossing, use of fluoride and other aspects of dental care
  • Refers patients to specialist for consultant services when necessary for patient’s oral health
  • Documents the patient’s visit including dental exam, diagnoses, and plan of action.
  • Follows up with patient regarding progress in high risk or emergency cases.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manages and consults with Dental Hygienist, EFDAs, and Dental Assistants as needed
  • Trains, mentors and supervises students and clinical support staff, as appropriate
