Special Education is Hiring an Interpreter (Paraprofessional) for Special Education Near Fort Smith, AR

POSITION TITLE: Special Education Interpreter (Paraprofessional)

FLSA: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Directors of Special Education and Building Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: A full contract for this position is 190 days, with benefits as specified in employee contract. Contract will be prorated based on actual start date. 

BEGINNING: August 7, 2023

LOCATION: Special Education (Service Center)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish, both written and orally. 
  • General typing and office skills for translations. 
  • Must have an Associate’s degree, 60 college credit hours or passing score on the ParaPro Praxis exam.
  • Preferred but not required: ABIE certification; willing to become Arkansas Bilingual Interpreter Certified.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

  • Translate written communication shared between the department and the school community.
  • Provide oral translation for conferences, IEP meetings, assessments, and phone calls as needed.
  • Assist with assembling or preparing materials for classrooms; as needed.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips; as needed.
  • Read to students, listen to students read and participate in other forms of oral communication with students; as needed.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Contact parents to obtain and/or convey student information.
  • Create and maintain a schedule of support being provided to schools.
  • Be flexible as weekly schedules may be required to be altered to assist the school buildings as the need arises.
  • Assist in other buildings and district events as needed.
  • Provide simultaneous translations between languages during formal presentations at school and district meeting sites as needed.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information about students.
  • Maintain acceptable attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain a safe working condition and safely operate electronic and other equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities. 
  • Participate appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend required meetings when requested.
  • Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and or outside agencies associated with the school. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Must have the ability to lift at least 40 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to endure prolonged standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, occasional reaching above the head or the shoulders, bending, squatting and kneeling.
