JOB TITLE: Tool Room ManagerLeads and manages the activities of the Tool Room and Die Service/Build Up which includes, builds, modifications, repairs, purchasing and vendor functions, scheduling, preventive maintenance, and management of staff. Works with design, engineering and production staff to ensure adherence to quality, timelines, scheduling and safety requirements. Performs supervisory duties, including team performance, productivity and work standards, maintaining/ building teamwork, staff development, and evaluating, coaching and disciplining team members.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Listed in order of time-spent or importance). Includes the following, but not limited to:
  • Leads and manages all Tool Room and Die Service/Build Up activities ensuring tools are maintained and ready to run production, as needed. Coordinates all improvement activities. Manages and maintains work area budget.
  • Manages and schedules tool and die work. Coordinates with engineering and production staff to determine needs and priorities. Maintains tooling schedule for repairs.
  • Manages all vendor outsourcing functions, including quotes, pricing, schedules, quality of work, etc. Ensures vendors receive accurate prints and documentation of contracted work. Maintains strong vendor relationships.
  • Plans and reviews new and modified tool and die work. Investigates and reviews needs, die requirements, sketches/blueprints, dimensions and plan layouts and assembly.
  • Tracks the condition of the tools. Oversees the repair and maintenance of dies. Evaluates problems, estimates repair requirements, makes and replaces components as needed, etc.
  • Coordinates with production and tooling for scheduling of die runs.
  • Assists tooling staff in the creation and tracking of spare parts.
  • Tracks PM/Breakdown cards and schedules maintenance.
  • Ensures proper care and maintenance of department equipment. Manages all routine servicing of machines.
  • Ensures proper housekeeping and inventory of tools and materials. Ensures completion of all reports and records.
  • Recommends and develops new processes and procedures and initiates/participates in their implementation.
  • Contributes to and supports the existence of a positive work environment through personal involvement by communicating, interacting and behaving in a manner that promotes productive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and others with whom such relationships are important to the success of company operations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Includes the following, but not limited to:
  • Leads and manages daily work area activities including, scheduling team workflow, developing work schedules, reviewing work completed by team members, and monitoring productivity, quality and safety.
  • Performs supervisory duties, including, hiring, training, evaluating, coaching and disciplining team members. Fosters a positive and engaged work environment. Scope of responsibility includes managing two groups, tool room staff and die service/build up staff which may total 30-50 team members.
  • Communicates directly to team members individual and team goals, performance expectations, obstacles, problems, issues, and successes. Informs team members of customer quality, product, delivery and team performance issues. Communicates company goals and strategies and how team and individual goals/performance fit into these goals/strategies.
  • Builds and maintains teamwork within team and between other teams in the company. Resolves conflicts between team members and with other teams.
  • Ensures all quality standards and procedures are communicated and followed. Ensures all safety rules and policies are communicated and followed. Leads by example.
  • Manages team member performance. Coaches, counsels and disciplines unacceptable behaviors and performance and recognizes and rewards exceptional, consistent and/or appropriate behaviors and performance. Mentors, trains and develops team members, ensuring a highly trained, skilled and high performance work team that contributes to meeting/exceeding team, site and organizational goals.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Certifications and Experience
Required:
High School diploma/GED.
3 years experience machine shop, tooling and repair.
2 years experience in a team lead, supervisory or management role.
Experience with die casting tooling
Preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related degree, or
Machine Shop Technology Certification and Tool and Die Journeyman’s card.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
REQUIRED:

Computer/Software skills
Proficient skills MS Word and Excel.
Proficient skills in computer numerical control (CNC) machines.
Communication skills
Advanced oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with all levels of employees and management and with external contacts. Demonstrates the ability to convey technical terminology and information that is meaningful and well received by others.
Ability to effectively communicate to team members, both oral and written, job information, feedback on performance, dept/company information, and other pertinent information in a way that is easily understood and well received.
Advanced ability to write technical documents, correspondence, training materials, manuals, etc.
Ability to teach and train others.
Ability to conduct productive meetings, and lead group discussions.
Technical, mechanical, mathematical and/or scientific skills:
Advanced knowledge of lathe, milling machine, grinding machines, drilling and sawing machines, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, and other common machine tools.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of die cast engineering, die cast processes and tooling.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations required to complete all principle duties and assigned tasks, including algebra, trigonometry, ratios, and proportions.
Problem Solving skills:
Advanced problem-solving skills, demonstrating the ability to participate in or lead problem solving sessions, examine various process variables and sets of data and make decisions as to how to solve basic to complex problems, and to create or improve a process.
Decision Making skills:
Advanced decision making skills. Ability to investigate, analyze and make decisions on how to solve complex problems/issues and provide solutions to create and improve processes.
Leadership skills:
Proficient leadership skills, demonstrating the ability to lead and manage: 1) daily work area activities, 2) performance, productivity, quality and safety, and 3) team development.
Other skills:
Ability to implement change and manage improvement projects.
Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and professionalism.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, including balancing priorities and deliverables.
Ability to work well within a team and manage a team.
