Department: Children & Family Services

Location: Oakland, CA & Concord, CA

Schedule: Monday through Friday

Travel: Local travel may be required

Salary: $70,000-$74,000 DOE

Employee Status: Regular, Full-time, Exempt

These holistic programs and services reach more than 11,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include: early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 250 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.

Program Summary

The Children and Family Services programs include Head Start, Early Head Start, State Pre-Kindergarten, Home Based Services, and Developmental Play Groups. Over 800 children birth through kindergarten entry and is this accurate? expectant parents and their families receive child development and comprehensive family services through the Unity Council. The programs are diverse, multilingual, developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive, and individualized for each child and family services are provided in four centers and two home based programs throughout Oakland and Monument Corridor neighborhood in Concord, CA.

Position Summary

Under general direction in the Health Services Manager, the Coordinator plans, implements Health procedures, and coordinates health, oral health, and nutrition services for the Early Head Start/Head Start (EHS/HS) program including on-site and home-based services. The Coordinator also provides support and direction to all staff related to monitoring and overseeing services to ensure consistent implementation of adopted agency policy; supervises assigned staff; and performs related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinate the health, oral health, and nutrition components for Early Head Start and Head Start in accordance with Head Start legislation, regulations, and other appropriate Federal and State requirements.
  • Plan, organize, oversee, and implement regularly scheduled health, oral health, and nutrition education training to increase parents and staff's knowledge in the following areas: the role health and nutrition plays in a child's physical and mental development; selection and preparation of food to meet family needs; interpretation and explanation of health, oral health, and nutrition related regulatory standards.
  • Assess the nutritional status of the children from available health records, known dietary history and staff observation at mealtime.
  • Provide staff with appropriate training and tools to identify children with health, oral health, and nutritional risk factors; provide parents of children identified as having health, oral health, and nutritional risk factors with appropriate counseling, educational materials, and referrals to effectively meet the special health, oral health, and nutritional needs of their child; schedule follow-up appointments with parents to re-assess the child's health and nutritional status.
  • Ensure special diet statements and health care action plans are completed and implemented in conjunction with and communicated to staff that are trained to work with children with these identified needs.
  • In conjunction with other managers and content experts, participate in agency planning, monitoring, and self-assessment activities.
  • Oversee confidential health and related data and work with Health Aides on the collection of Health mandates such as physicals, well-baby checks, 30, 45, and 90 day screenings.
  • Ensure all data is properly entered into Child Plus and follow-ups are made by Health Aides in the event of missing information.
  • Identify community resources in the areas of health, oral health, and nutrition to provide mandated services and training.
  • Supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff.
  • Conduct site visits in Oakland and Concord to monitor health, oral health and nutrition services and to observe health, oral health, and nutrition practice as well as provide exposure to and training of such concepts in the classroom environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • AA or BA. in Health, Nutrition, Sociology, or related field.
  • 2-3 years experience working with low income families or in child development programs.
  • Familiarity with local Health services providers.
  • Familiarity with Public Health principles.
  • Good writing ability and experience in program-related materials.
  • Caring, compassionate approach to working with children and families.
  • Communicating with families of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Coordinating and integrating a variety of services for families in compliance with program standards.
  • Working collaboratively with a wide range of co-workers and partners.
  • Familiarity with administrative procedures.
  • Ability to work harmoniously in a diverse team.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety rules regarding lifting, general safety, and utilizing preventative health measures to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Familiarity with Office and basic computer skills.
  • Required- Bilingual (Spanish/English).

Physical Requirements

Must be able climb stairs, reach, bend, lift 20-30 pounds, crawl, kneel, stoop, twist, grasp with hands and fingers materials, use arms and legs, able to walk, climb ladders if applicable.
