Southwest Research Institute is Hiring a STUDENT ASSISTANT-R&D - Materials Chemistry Summer Student Intern Near San Antonio, TX

Who We Are:

Join the Surface Engineering and Materials Chemistry Section, within the Materials Engineering Department as a Summer Intern! Our group applies coatings or surface treatments to enhance the optical, chemical, electrical, mechanical, or structural properties of a components. As a member of the team, you will help develop creative solutions for existing and next-generation technologies for both government and industry clients. You will have the opportunity to work with scientists and engineers who are experts in their fields and gain exposure to a diverse array of projects and technologies.

Objectives of this Role:
  • Work alongside engineering staff to perform experiments in material synthesis and characterization, thin film coating fabrication, process optimization and development.
  • Be a solution-oriented problem solver that exercises creativity and independent judgement in determining approaches to solve a wide range of technical problems.
  • Learn new technical skills to complete project work and develop new materials and processes.
  • Get exposed to a variety of projects and real world technical problems.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Assists with building components, subunits, models, and adaptations of standard equipment.
  • Performs experiments; documents in lab notebook, interprets data to determine pass/fail criteria for next steps
  • Hands-on work in laboratory environments.
  • Quickly learn chemical and material synthesis processes.
Requirements:
  • Must be pursuing a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Strong interest in chemical engineering, technical challenges and problem solving.
  • Strong Communication Skills.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

  • Fuels and Lubricants Research-Performing fuels and lubricants research activities to meet regulatory and competitive goals.
  • Intelligent Systems-Providing engineering services in resaerch and development of complex systems and equipment.
  • Mechanical Engineering-Improving safety, reliability, efficiency and life of new or existing mechanical components or systems.
  • Powertrain Engineering-Designing and developing vehicle and engine components to achieve performance and emissions goals.
  • Space Science & Engineering-Developing and managing advanced scientific payloads aboard satellites and sounding rockets.
