Southwest Research Institute is Hiring a RESEARCH SCIENTIST - Stellar Magnetism - Boulder, Colorado Near Boulder, CO

Who We Are:

As a recognized leader in space science research and spacecraft instrumentation, we are helping to reveal the secrets of our solar system and the universe. We are looking for a research scientist with a strong background in magnetohydrodynamic convection and parallel software development to join our team and contribute to ongoing studies of the solar dynamo.

Objectives of this Role:
  • Conduct numerical modeling of stellar interior convection with a focus on those dynamics associated with angular momentum transport by small-scale magnetism.
  • Contribute to the development of a theoretical framework for understanding the physical implications of recently-discovered inertial waves in the solar photosphere.
  • Implement alternative-basis function representations within the Rayleigh convection code to facilitate the use of a sparse linear solve.
  • Develop and grow an independent research program through external program support
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Independently develop and implement numerical experiments and theoretical investigations designed to examine angular momentum transport and magnetic field generation in stellar interiors.
  • Present and disseminate research results to the broader scientific community. This includes attending professional meetings and conferences, submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to weekly SWRI Solar and Boulder Convection group meetings.
  • Actively seek external support of research activities and participate in solar group proposals that support the strategic growth of the department.
  • Contribute to the joint mentorship of postdocs in our group working on problems in stellar dynamo theory.
  • Contribute to the continued development of open-source fluids software packages such as Rayleigh, Dedelus and Coral.
Requirements:
  • Requires an PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Solar Physics, Planetary Sciences or Related Field
  • 3 years: Post Ph.D. experience in scientific software development with demonstrated proficiency working with compiled languages such as FORTRAN and C/C , as well as in the MPI and OpenMP standards.
  • 3 years: Post PhD experience in development of sparse-matrix and/or parallel-spectral algorithms for application in fluids solvers.
  • 3 years: Post PhD experience in the application of computational fluid dynamics software (e.g., ASH, Rayleigh, Dedelus, Magic) to the study of stellar and planetary convection.
  • Demonstrated post-PhD record of published research on the solar dynamo and related topics, including convection, magnetohydrynamics, and atmospheric wave theory.
Special Requirements:

Work assignment is in Boulder, Colorado.
