The Student Nurse Extern performs under the direct supervision of a qualified Registered Nurse preceptor (for RN candidates) uses the nursing process to safely coordinate total patient care and education for an assigned number of patients and is responsible to the Patient Care Manager/Unit Manager. At all times, patient assignments will be determined by adjustment of patient census and current staffing levels for the overall patient care units. Assignments to other patient care units are established by census and staff levels which is reviewed on a shift-to-shift basis. As determined by the Nurse Manager, the Student Nurse Extern will be assigned up to 40 hours per week and will rotate between day and night shift according to the needs of the unit and staff/preceptors. The Student Nurse Extern is expected to function within the scope of approved policies, procedures and regulations for the department and organization and by the guidelines developed by Mississippi Hospital Association. He/she preforms approved clinical skills under the direct supervision of the RN preceptor. He/she must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served and knowledge of the principles of growth and development. Must be able to work and relate in a professional, non-defensive manner with peers, physicians, administration, patients and visitors. Will be responsible to document total care given, review and maintain patient chart per policy and assist with accurate and timely entry of patient data, and charges into computer system. The successful candidate will have to pass a pharmacology test. Attendance to yearly mandatory education requirements is nonnegotiable and will be the responsibility of the employee to arrange and attend sessions.
