Southgate Recreation & Park District is Hiring a Lifeguard Near Sacramento, CA

LIFEGUARD/SWIM INSTRUCTOR

Under direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Specialist, Pool Manager, or Senior Lifeguard, works as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor at a community aquatic facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervises patrons and participants in pool and deck area.

Supervises patrons and participants involved in swim instruction.

Provides accident prevention and education of the public with regard to water safety.

Maintains discipline and safeguards and regulates the conduct of patrons in order to prevent accidents and drowning by enforcing pertinent rules and regulations.

Renders care in the most current American Red Cross techniques in water safety, lifeguarding, first aid, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to persons in need of assistance.

Instructs swim lessons ranging from infants to adults.

Prepares lesson plans in accordance with District procedures.

Follows oral and written instructions.

Works harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public.

Performs under various weather conditions.

Communicates effectively and tactfully with the participants and parents or guardians.

Prepares and maintains records and reports.

Performs administrative tasks, such as completing report cards, swim instruction forms, and accident/incident reports.

Installs and removes lane lines and pool covers.

Assists in general upkeep of pool and office area and surrounding facility.

Attends staff in-service trainings.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Greets public, answers telephones, and provides information to public or directs them to proper office as scheduled. In addition, to other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of and Skilled in: American Red Cross lifeguard and rescue techniques; all aspects of water safety, first aid, CPR and AED; enforce pool rules.

Ability to: Follow oral and written instructions; work harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public. Monitor activity in aquatic areas to prevent accidents; rescue swimmers; administer first aid; train in American Red Cross and District lifeguard skills and first aid procedures; ensure safe operation of the swim center; maintain patron control and effectively enforce facility rules and regulations; inspect and maintain facilities and equipment. Effectively instruct all levels of swimming.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform the skills required in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification. Must be able to perform physical labor, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects, walk, stand, stoop and crouch for long periods; and climb ladders. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must be able to perform under various weather conditions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must be at least 15 years old.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

The following American Red Cross certifications must be completed prior to employment as a Lifeguard:

  • Lifeguard Training/ First Aid /CPR/AED
  • First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) - within 12 months of obtaining Lifeguard Training Certificate

Staff must complete in-service swim lesson instructor training annually to be scheduled for shifts as a Swim Instructor.

EMPLOYMENT LENGTH

Employment may be offered on a part-time basis starting in March. Beginning in June, employees will be expected to work 30-40 hours per week for the entire season which runs from June through September. As a condition of employment, may be required to work a variety of hours including evenings, weekends and holidays and participate in regular in-service training sessions throughout the aquatic season. The aquatics season runs during the following dates, beginning in 2023:

-Winter/Spring hours: March-May

-Summer hours: End of May-End of August

-Fall hours: September – October

COMPENSATION

Lifeguard: $ 17.50 - $ 18.00

Swim Instructor: $ 18.00 - $ 18.50
