BASIC FUNCTION

This position is responsible for identifying properties in violation of Southfield’s tall grass and tall weed ordinance for the purpose of abatement. This position is designed to ensure the public health, safety, welfare, and/or comfort of the community and the general public. Seasonal part-time; up to 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Inspects and identifies private properties with tall weeds and grass

· Creates tall weeds and grass investigation cases for initial inspection process

· Enters inspections and abatement results related to tall weeds and grass investigation and violation cases

· Reviews tall weeds and grass abatement photographs for accuracy

· Prepare reports and maintain detailed records including photographic records

· Provides a list of properties requiring abatement by vendor or internal staff

· When required, communicates with vendors to obtain additional information

· Organizes shared case information

· Operates and maintains city-owned vehicle

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

· Additional duties as may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

· Requires High School diploma or equivalent

· Ability to prepare, organize and maintain a variety of field data reports

· Must be able to work independently without close supervision

· Must have ability to effectively communicate in oral and written format

· Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents and co-workers; public contact experience and skills necessary to encourage cooperation and compliance

· Requires sufficient physical ability to accomplish essential functions in stated environment, with or without accommodation

· Involves year-round exposure to variable weather conditions and exposure to hazards associated with field inspections of construction projects, irregular terrain, and vacant property

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC.

· Requires valid Driver's License and good driving record based upon City's current driving standards.

WORKING CONDITIONS

· Involves year-round exposure to variable weather conditions.

· Involves exposure to hazards or risk of injury associated with field inspections of construction projects, irregular terrain, and vacant property, and with regular vehicle operation.

· May encounter stray or wild animals.

CHALLENGES

This position is challenged to ensure that the City of Southfield’s high standards of curb appeal are maintained through abatement of ordinance violations. Although the most difficult problems are referred to the supervisor or senior staff member, the incumbent must regularly exercise independent judgment and discretion based upon knowledge of the position, policies, procedures, and past practices.
