Become a Special Studies Engineering Manager 1 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you will be leading 5 employees with focus on distribution grid planning analysis under Distribution System Analysis within SCE’s Asset Strategy and Planning (ASP) organization.

As the leader of the Special Studies group, you will be responsible for distribution studies and analysis that are outside of the core annual planning cycle. These studies include but are not limited to distribution circuit automation analysis, short circuit duty analysis to evaluate circuit breaker replacement needs, DER Driven analysis to identify cumulative system impact of natural adoption, and physical security analysis. As applicable, you will apply or develop new methodologies, criteria, and guidelines for those studies which are necessary to inform SCE’s strategy, business, and regulatory direction.

  • Manage the team by mentoring, providing guidance to accomplish functional responsibilities and achieve their career goals, while supporting our mission of safe, reliable, and clean energy future.
  • Lead the development and execution of Distribution Automation studies, in coordination with the Grid Modernization team, to inform circuit automation strategy including sensor and switch placement
  • Oversee studies to support Ground Rings mapping for field personnel safety
  • Lead the analysis and process improvements to evaluate and sponsor circuit breaker replacements due to short circuit duty impact
  • Oversee the technical system analysis and identify investments needed to mitigate DER driven needs that have accumulated as natural adoption continues (e.g. Der Driven Studies, Grid Reinforcement)
  • Lead grid assessments supporting regulatory proceedings (e.g., Microgrid Order Instituting Rulemaking)
  • Lead special (“one off” or unique) studies that inform Grid policies and strategies
  • Collaborate with the Subtransmission and Transmission technical grid assessments
  • Collaborate with Strategy, Forecasting, Distribution System Planning, and other stakeholders within the company to achieve common goals and objectives
  • Lead by example, maintain a safety conscious work environment by following Edison’s safety protocols and safe work practices in addition to providing support with all other duties assigned

Qualifications


The essentials

  • Five or more years of combined experience performing/managing/supervising in an Engineering related capacity within Electric Utility Distribution system planning and/or Transmission system planning.

The preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • Experience with power system engineering analysis (e.g., power flow, short-circuit duty), including knowledge of applicable regulations, standards, codes, and analysis software such as CYME, PSLF, PowerWorld, CAPE
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and deliver technical presentations to both a technical and non-technical audience, including external settings
  • Work effectively in areas where processes are not clearly defined, self-starter
  • Influence others and maintain positive working relationships
  • Stay current with relevant technology and innovation
  • Ability to integrate work across relevant areas, manage risks appropriately, develop and execute business plans, manage information, and provide extraordinary service to internal clients and external customers.
  • Provide excellent resource and project planning, decision-making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current with technology and innovation.

You should know

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
