Job Description
Job Title: Grounds Custodian
Hours: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm (M-F)
*Effective July 1, 2024
**Hours and schedule may vary based on seasons, outdoor activities, etc.

Qualifications:

Required:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. ?Ability to perform basic mathematical skills, such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication, to determine weight, volume, and distance.
  3. Ability to read, write, and interpret rules, reports, and procedure manuals as required when performing assignments.
  4. The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking to others so they will understand both orally and in writing.
  5. Ability to prioritize, organize, and accomplish assigned work.
  6. Ability to work independently and/or as a team to complete tasks and meet goals.
  7. Ability to recognize problems, determine causes, and take appropriate action for resolution.
  8. Ability to take direction and respond to requests in a courteous and helpful manner.
  9. The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking to others so they will understand both orally and in writing.
  10. Knowledge of how to safely use, post notice, and dispose of chemicals.
  11. Ability to work independently and/or as a team to complete tasks and meet goals.

Desired:

  1. Experience in grounds/lawn care, snow removal, or related experience.
  2. Knowledge of fire and safety codes.

Reports to:  Director of Buildings and Grounds 

Job Goal: This position is responsible for performing grounds work in assigned locations under the supervision of the Director of Building and Grounds. Responsibilities will include basic lawn care (mowing, landscaping, general maintenance), assisting with outdoor activities (mowing, landscaping, general maintenance), and snow removal (operating large plow trucks, shoveling snow, applying salt to surfaces).

Performance Responsibilities:

Duties and hours may vary by season and/or activity event.

  1. Plant, trim, spray, mow, weed, sweep, rake, cultivate, plant, dig, water, shovel snow, remove ice, spread salt, and other related functions of a groundskeeper.
  2. Possess the ability, experience, and necessary training to operate machinery such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, skid-steer loaders, etc.
  3. Ability to maintain lawnmowers and other landscaping equipment.
  4. Operate various types of equipment, including front-end loaders, power mowers, saws, sprayers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, blowers, hand pruners, and pole straws.
  5. Operate light or medium weight trucks and tractors, and attachments used to maintain grounds as needed.
  6. Assist in preparing and maintaining specified grounds or activity areas for special events as directed by the Director.
  7. Move and arrange furniture or equipment as required.
  8. Remove debris from driveways, garages, bus loading areas, and entrances to buildings and activity venues.
  9. Assist building custodians in the set-up/removal of chairs and tables for special events.
  10. Fill in for other shift custodial absences as required by the Administration.
  11. Request repair work as discovered and report any maintenance needs immediately.
  12. Keep equipment clean and neat.
  13. Perform minor adjustments and repairs as needed.
  14. Reports to work each day neat and clean.
  15. Works in all types of weather conditions.
  16. Regular and reliable attendance.
  17. Manages one’s own time efficiently.
  18. Attend in-service training and school meetings as directed.
  19. Demonstrates a positive attitude, loyalty, cooperation, teamwork, attendance, and safety.
  20. Maintains good public relations with students, parents, faculty, and community.

Physical Demands:

  1. Must be able to work with interruptions frequently during a work shift.
  2. ?Must be capable of walking/standing constantly.
  3. Must be capable occasionally of lifting up to 50 pounds to waist level.
  4. Must be capable of carrying 40 pounds up to 13 steps as many as 50 times per month.
  5. Must occasionally carry 25 pounds at waist level for a distance of 100 feet.
  6. Must be capable occasionally of climbing eight steps of a portable ladder.
  7. Must occasionally, climb 12 steps of a fixed ladder and set foot on a roof.
  8. During winter months, must be capable of operating a single-stage snow thrower, snow truck, or other equipment or shoveling snow, as assigned by the director.
  9. Must be capable frequently of squatting for up to 2 minutes at a time.
  10. Must be capable occasionally of bending over for up to 3 minutes at a time.
  11. Must be capable occasionally of pushing folding chair portable cart requiring 70 pounds-force, then lifting folding chairs weighing 5 pounds from two-tier portable cart to floor.
  12. Must be capable of using hand tools requiring a grip force of up to 15 pounds.
  13. Must be capable of working in extreme temperatures or humid and dusty environments.

Note: The physical demands described above represent real-life tasks an employee may need to perform as part of the essential functions of this job. While the frequency may be low, the above-stated physical demands may be required during the course of a daily work shift. Tasks with physical demands exceeding the above-stated limits should only be performed with sufficient manpower or material handling equipment.

Clothing:

  1. Safety glasses, rubber-toed shoes/boots, no open-toed shoes or sandals, street clothes.
  2. ?Based on job duties, rubber gloves, boots, face shields, general purpose/protective gloves, and ear protection are provided.

Terms of Employment:

  1. Employment-based on need.
  2. Hours as assigned by the Director of Building and Grounds or designee.
