Infection Prevention & Control | Cape Girardeau, MO | Full Time

Job Summary
The Infection Preventionist will provide leadership and program management for the infection prevention and Control program. They will function as an integral part of the health care team to promote a high reliability safety culture to improve patient outcomes, reduce hospital acquired infections and mitigate the risk of occupational exposure to infectious disease. Infection Perfectionists are responsible for the prevention, investigation, monitoring and reporting of infectious diseases.
Essential Functions
  • Participates in program planning, communication and feedback, and quality/performance improvement and patient safety activities related to infection prevention and control utilizing independent critical decision-making skills and professional judgement
  • Assists in infection risk assessment for the organization to aligns initiatives with the organization patient safety program
  • Identification of infectious disease processes: interpreting results of diagnostic/laboratory tests, recognizing the significant organisms for immediate review and investigation
  • Surveillance and epidemiologic investigations: effective use of technology and clinical rounding to collect and compile surveillance data for the identification and control of any infectious disease outbreak
  • Assists in data entry for external reporting requirements to regulatory agencies (NHSN, DHSS, etc.)
  • Preventing/controlling the transmission of infectious agents through assisting in the development and review of infection prevention and control policies and procedures, collaboration with public health agencies, and facilities management
  • Participates in Emergency Management planning and assists with emergency preparedness strategy to ensure compliance with infection prevention and control principles, policies, and procedures
  • Work collaboratively with Employee/Occupational Health to develop screening and immunization programs and assess risk of occupational exposure to infectious disease
  • Recommends changes in practice based on clinical outcomes and financial implications
  • Participates in equipment, supplies and product evaluations and selections
  • Assess education needs of patient, families, and healthcare workers and provide educational offerings to prevent and control infections
  • Apply critical analysis to evaluate research findings and incorporate them into practice through education and consultation; utilize scientific research findings to recommend, implement and monitor policies and procedures for hospital staff regarding sterilization, disinfection and decontamination of personnel, instruments and equipment
  • Provides infection prevention and control findings, recommendations, annual reports, policies and procedures to appropriate individuals, committees, departments and units; facilitates/participates on the Infection Prevention and Control Committee
  • Presents quality/performance improvement projects through the effective use of graphic tools
  • Facilitates compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements for infection prevention and control practices
  • Act as a source of reference and provide information relating to the field of infection prevention and control for all departments; being available as a resource for emergency/urgent issues after business hours
  • Facilitates appropriate identification, isolation and education of patients and employees in regards to effective infection prevention practices
  • Any other duties as needed to drive to the Vision, fulfill the Mission and abide by the Values of the organization
Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in related field of study required
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field of study preferred
  • Minimum of 6 months Must have a background in one of the following areas: Nursing, Public Health, Microbiology, Laboratory Studies, Medical Technology, Information Technology, Allied Health Professions (Respiratory Therapy, Medical Imaging, Radiography) required
  • LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - State Licensure State of Missouri Upon Hire required
  • CIC - Certified in Infection Control And completes ongoing education and maintains certification by retesting every 5 years Within 3 Years required
  • Must have completed basic course in infection prevention provided by an approved organization Within 1 Year required
  • Maintains membership in the Association of Professionals in Infection Control (APIC) required
