General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Administrative Director – Residence Life and Residence Life Manager, the Assistant Residence Life Manager assists with supervising and managing of day-to-day operations of the College student residential units. The Assistant Residence Life Manager also supervises student residence hall assistants. These responsibilities include training the student residence hall assistants, helping them check in and check out students, inspecting housing units for safety and cleanliness, helping reinforce housing conduct expectations, and managing student behavior in college housing. The position oversees housing-related student activities and guides student RAs in developing and safely carrying out engaging and educational activities while ensuring the welfare of all residents. The position may also assist with campus evening activities including supervision of intramurals or other housing-related student activities. This is a full-time regular live-in position.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Policy Enforcement:
  • Assists in enforcing established policies and procedures equitably and fairly.
  • Serves as an intermediary between students and administration.
  • Consistently professional and engaging and a positive role model for students, behaving in a manner consistent with the College and residence life conduct expectations.
  • Presents information on residence life policies during New Student Residence Hall Orientation.
Supervises Resident Assistants:
  • Oversees interviewing, selection, and supervision of the work of the resident assistants.
  • Assists in resident assistant training and evaluation of resident assistants.
Maintains Student Files:
  • Assists in maintaining student records and files.
  • Reports student status to the Residence Life Manager.
Maintenance and Upkeep:
  • In cooperation with the campus maintenance department, ensures that the housing facilities and equipment are maintained in operational condition.
Check-In and Check-Out:
  • Assists with checking new students into student housing, each term.
  • Assists with checking out graduates and students leaving student housing, at the end of each term.
Room Inspection:
  • Coordinates periodic inspections of rooms for safety and sanitation.
Monitors Residence Security:
  • In cooperation with the Campus Safety & Security Coordinator and security company, ensure that overall security measures are maintained.
  • Continuously evaluates and alters student safety and security measures, if and when needed.
  • Ensures that an accurate inventory of keys is available and current.
  • Ensures buildings are secure.
Student Assistance:
  • Helps students with cleaning equipment, keys, telephone messages, mail/packages, and basic needs.
  • Assists Residence Life Manager in preparing all housing contracts, and sending out all housing information to prospective students each term. Also sends out information regarding each student’s roommate(s).
Residence Hall Tours and Promotion:
  • Assists in providing tours of residence hall rooms/apartments to prospective students.
  • Promote Residence Life to new and prospective students during events on campus, including New Student Orientation and Discovery Days
Activity Programming:
  • Assists resident assistants in planning, coordinating, and implementing residence hall programming activities.
  • Creates weekly signs and monthly posters to promote activities.
  • Supervises, enforces rules, and participates in weekly activities.
Coordinates and Performs Other Functions as Requested:
  • Organizes, plans, and implements other functions as assigned by the Residence Life Manager.

MARGINALFUNCTIONS

  • Supervises the use and upkeep of recreational equipment and facilities. In cooperation with the Physical Plant Office, ensures that the housing facilities and equipment are maintained in operational condition.
  • Provides appropriate guidance and referral assistance for students.
  • Perform other related duties within the division/program as assigned.
  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

REQUIREDKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ANDABILITIES

  • Ability and skills to recognize when students are in distress, manage emergencies, and make referrals to appropriate college and community services.
  • Ability and knowledge to convey the lifestyle and student responsibilities required in residential living.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize, identify, and resolve typical student challenges while living on campus.
  • Ability and skills to articulate residential policies to residents, verbally and in written form.
  • Leadership skills and ability to work, communicate, and develop rapport with students, administration, and community groups.
  • Teamwork skills and ability to communicate effectively with groups and individuals in problem resolution.
  • Ability to communicate with staff and faculty.
  • Ability to apply fair and equitable disciplinary sanctions upon students who have violated established policy.
  • Ability to organize, develop, and implement student development programs for the benefit of the residential students.
  • Knowledge and ability to use a computer for word processing, database management, email, and other administrative functions.
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to 50 pounds. Mobility is occasionally required.
  • The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

SCHEDULE

Hours of work for this live-in position are scheduled by the College Monday through Sunday, with a 40-hour workweek. This is a full-time, regular position based on a 260-day work calendar. Evening, overnight, and weekend student supervision is a regular part of the job. Typical hours are evening hours scheduled between 12:00 PM and midnight. The incumbent will be required to live in the residence hall for 12 months per year, have ‘on-call’ responsibilities, and will be required to respond to emergencies and other situations during and after normal business hours. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek. An unfurnished apartment is provided.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • One (1) year of experience working with students in a college environment, social/human services, sales, marketing, or similar occupations where the ability to work with people is critical. Volunteer work may be considered upon review by the College.
Desired Qualifications
  • One (1) year of residence hall experience (living and working with students as a resident assistant, desk worker, or assistant hall manager) in a collegiate setting.
  • Associate Degree or two (2) years of college, including at least 12 credit hours of coursework in human development theory, counseling, psychology, and sociology.
Salary
$14.93/hour
