The Surgical Podiatrist position provides outpatient and surgical services for SEARHC patients in the ambulatory care, emergency department, and inpatient settings. The primary location may be Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center in Sitka or the Ethel Lund Medical Center in Juneau. The provider acts as Podiatry consultant for providers and patients throughout the Consortium. Work includes travel to Klawock, Haines and other rural communities as directed. The provider will maintain a surgical practice at MEMC. Surgical services are defined by the provider’s medical staff privileges and hospital capacity.
Requires high level skill and medical decision-making in the practice of podiatric medicine including outpatient evaluations, care plans, and decisions regarding the need for surgery. Surgical decision-making should be appropriate to the patient’s needs and facility capacity. Surgical care includes preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative planning and care across a broad geographic range and highly variable patient care environments. Surgical care at MEMC requires complex decision-making and care coordination.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

  • Provides comprehensive podiatric services in the outpatient environment at multiple SEARHC locations. Coordinates patient care with referring primary care providers including communication of care plans for patient management between specialty visits. Communication can be through the EHR with direct, provider to provider communication of any critical patient care issues.

  • Serves as podiatry consultant for SEARHC health care providers throughout Southeast Alaska. Work Includes field visits to Haines, Klawock, and other communities as directed. Patient care and primary care support may be in person or via telemedicine encounters.

  • Ensures sound surgical decision making around patient care needs and facility capacity. Surgical care should be coordinated with Orthopedics to ensure optimal patient routing. OR care must be coordinated and supported by other members of the surgical team. Patient care needs should be coordinated with Anesthesia, Hospitalist, and other staff members as appropriate.

  • Participates in the Surgery, Trauma, and Anesthesia (STA) Subcommittee and Surgical Services Executive Committee (SSEC) as appropriate.

  • Participates in all medical staff functions as requested, to include quality assurance reviews and medical staff meetings. Other Medical Staff duties and responsibilities are directed by the Medical Director and Medical Executive Committee.

  • Abides by medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, and clinical services policies and procedures.

Education,Certifications, and Licenses Required

  • DPM degree

  • Successful completion of an accredited Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Residency (PMSR) program.

  • Licensure by the Alaska State Medical Board

  • Board eligibility or certification by the ABPM (with surgical certification) or the ABFAS.

  • BLS Certification required. Certification in ATLS, ACLS and PALS is desired but not required.

Experience Required

  • 5 years or more experience in surgical podiatry is desired but not required.

Knowledge of

  • Knowledge of medical and surgical podiatric practices and procedures. 

  • Knowledge of medical theories and therapies.

  • Detailed knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

Skills in

  • Surgical skills related to the practice of podiatry.

  • Communication skills, both verbal and written. 

Ability to

  • Ability to work independently in caring for complex patients. 

  • Ability to coordinate care through the operating room and perioperative services teams.

  • Ability to communicate with patients and staff in an open, caring, and supportive manner.

Required Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association, Board Eligibility or Certification (with surgical certification) - The Americal Board of Podiatric Medicine, Board Eligibility or Certification - The American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Medical Doctor - State of Alaska - Alaska State Medical Board
