JOB TITLE: HEAD TEACHER - Preschool
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Director, responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating appropriate programs for children which meet their physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs. As part of a team, provide care and implement a developmentally appropriate program for the assigned age group. The head teacher reports to the Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES/WORK REQUIREMENTS:
● Plan and conduct an effective child development program. This should be done based on the goals and general curriculum plan of the South Windsor Child Development Center.
● Ensure the safety of children through constant supervision, effective arrangement of space, proper maintenance of equipment.
● Assist in maintenance and environment chores in order to provide a safe and sanitary environment.
Report necessary repairs to the Director.
● Ensure that child care routines are carried out in a manner that is prompt, hygienic, and consistent with the good child development principles. This includes routines related to diapering, potty training, hand washing, eating, napping and transitioning between activities.
● Maintain written records designed to evaluate each individual child as well as the class as a whole.
● Prepare newsletters and/or class bulletins in conjunction with the Director and/or Administrative
Assistant.
● Participating in the training of staff and volunteers. Conduct classroom orientation for new staff.
Supervise and evaluate classroom staff in conjunction with the Director.
● Create a pleasant, inviting classroom atmosphere in which children feel comfortable and secure.
● Contribute to the operation of the center by participating in staff meetings and sharing information gained through attendance at workshops and professional reading.
● Participate in maintaining NAEYC accreditation standards.
● In collaboration with the Director, Instructional Leader and Assistant Teacher, set program goals and objectives, prepare staffing plans and assist in resolving classroom teaching/problems.
● Plan and arrange for acquisition and optimum use of teaching materials.
● Contribute to the operation of the center by participating in staff meetings and sharing information gained through attendance at workshops and professional reading.
● Develop and maintain an open communication system with parents. Conduct family conferences as required.
● Promotes effective working relationships and works cooperatively as a part of a team to facilitate the center’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
● Physically able and willing to interact with children in the indoor and outdoor environment.
● Performs related duties as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
● Knowledge of Early Learning Development Standards or similar curriculum based on DAP goals and objectives.
● Experience in assessing young children utilizing a structured assessment framework.
● Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment in situations and flexibility in accommodating individual needs/skills for each child.
● Knowledge of NAEYC Accreditation Standards.
● Ability to maintain confidentiality.
● Ability to work in a center environment, actively participate in activities with children both indoors and outdoors. This may include standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing light objects and lifting children up to 40 pounds.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
● Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood education and at least one year of experience teaching in an early childhood program.
● A college degree in an appropriate human service or education field including 36 credits in early childhood, elementary education or special education and at least one year of experience in an early childhood program.
● Completion of First Aid and CPR courses or willingness to complete required courses.
Full Time: Monday - Friday, 7:00AM-3:00PM/7:30AM-3:30PM
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
