Job Title: Custodian-Food Service Worker Exemption Status/Test: Non-Exempt

Primary Purpose:

Cleans and maintains the interior and exterior of the school cafeteria and a variety of cafeteria equipment in order to ensure proper sanitation methods. The employee will maintain assigned custodial equipment.

Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures

Knowledge of minor repair techniques

Ability to operate cleaning equipment

Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Cleaning

  • Kitchen and cafeteria cleaning including: loading, running, and unloading the ice chests to and from the classrooms, empty and clean trash receptacles, recyclables, and compost containers. The employee will wash walls and windows and clean kitchen equipment.
  • General facility exterior cleaning and maintenance includes: sweeping sidewalks and wash walls, doors and windows.
  • Preparation and serving of food for all students and staff using safe food handling practices.
  • Request additional supplies as needed.

Maintenance and Repair

  • Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs as needed.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff.
  • Move equipment within cafeteria as directed by supervisor as needed.
  • Assist in setting up facilities for special events.

Safety

  • Assist with opening and closing building each school day checking to ensure that all exit doors are open and all locks are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of cafeteria merchandise.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Must be able to work as a team member, be self-motivated, use clear communication strategies and practices, and be responsible for following school policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Buffer, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, mop, broom, and hand tools

Posture: Frequent standing, walk, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing ladders, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching, and overhead reaching

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (50 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials; will work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
