SOUTH SUNFLOWER COUNTY HOSPITAL

DIRECTOR OF RADIOLOGY

Reports To: Director of Ancillary Services

I. Summary

Responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the overall operation of the imaging services provided within the hospital. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Develops and implements plans and procedures regarding operations, staffing, and purchasing of radiology supplies and equipment. Assists in formulating budgets. Maintains efficient and effective department operation while requiring compliance with all JCAHO, state, federal and local regulatory laws, standards and protocols.

II. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures the delivery of quality services in the area of operations.

  • Interacts professionally with patient/family. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.

  • Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.

  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

  • Reviews work schedules and assign's duties to workers to maintain patient flow.

  • Oversees staff in the operation of imaging equipment, such as X-ray, Fluoro, CT, Mammography, and Ultrasound.

  • Reviews QC logs.

  • Evaluates accuracy and quality of images and provides technical assistance to staff.

  • Implements and monitors radiation safety measures to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

  • Evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions.

  • Recommends wage adjustments and other actions concerning employee status as necessary.

  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, other department directors, medical director, and administrative team.

  • Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.

  • Holds staff accountable for carrying out their job-specific duties and responsibilities.

  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and terminating staff.

  • Ensures contrast media is stored safely.

  • Ensures that the staff technologists are not allowed to perform independent fluoroscopic examinations.

  • Ensures preventative maintenance on equipment.

  • Provides education and guidance to staff on performance improvement.

  • Other duties as assigned.

III. Professional Requirements

  • Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.

  • Competes annual educational requirements.

  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards related to the Imaging Services Department and, as appropriate, to the hospital.

  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.

  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled

  • Wears identification while on duty

  • Attends annual review and performs departmental in-services

  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments, and staff.

  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

  • Attends committee, CQI, and management meetings, as appropriate.

  • Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required

  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, and infection control.

  • Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directives to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.

  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

IV. Regulatory Requirements

  • High School Graduate; BS degree preferred.

  • Graduation from AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology, either college affiliated or hospital trained.

  • Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist.

  • Certified by the State of Mississippi to practice and administer radiation.

  • Current BCLS Certification.

  • Some background in Imaging Service Administration; experience such as Supervisor or Assistant Director of an Imaging Service Department.

  • At least 5 active years in a department with diagnostic and special procedures experience.

V. Language Skills

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

  • Additional languages preferred.
