South Dakota State University is Hiring a Better Choices, Better Health Community Health Educator Near Mitchell, SD

Are you interested in helping others and your community? Do you have a passion for education and health? South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is offering an exciting opportunity in our Better Choices, Better Health (BCBH) Program within our Food and Families Programs! This position can be located at any of the reginal centers within the state of South Dakota (Sioux Falls, Pierre, Winner, Lemmon, Mitchell or Aberdeen).

Job Responsibilities: Provide comprehensive public health services with the implementation of evidence-based self-management education programs; build individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge, self-efficacy, and self-sufficiency through a range of activities with developed processes such as outreach, education, health promotion and disease prevention, social support, and advocacy; provide health and wellness support for disease prevention, behavior change, and healthy lifestyles; and, interpreting program-specific guidelines to answer questions and advise others on specific program issues or matters. Serve as a critical link between BCBH-SD programs and communities and health systems to reduce disparities, increase health education and improve health outcomes, and empower individuals and communities for better health.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Chronic disease prevention and health promotion programs;
  • Basic statistical measures;
  • Database development and maintenance;
  • Computer software and systems (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).

Skill & Ability to:

  • Gather, interpret, and report basic health findings;
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
  • Communicate effectively; oral, written, and listening skills;
  • Demonstrate experience in managing inventories;
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences including close understanding of the ethnicity, language, socio-economic status, and life experiences of the community served;
  • Teach adults 1:1 or in a group setting;
  • Lift up to 40lbs

Required License: Valid Driver’s License

Comments: Experience working with adults with chronic health conditions preferred. Routine travel to conduct classes at various sites is required along with some overnight travel for training. Some evening and weekend work may be required. SDSU is a tobacco free environment. This position is classified as Program Assistant I.
