Departmental Objective 

To efficiently conduct research in compliance with the Quality Management System, the Animal Care and Use Program, project budgets, and timelines 

To expand and improve the site research activities through innovation, development, and customer focus 

Primary Job Purpose 

Performing routine basic study activities and aiding study coordinators, researchers, and clinicians, and assisting when needed in the care of study animals, the sanitation and maintenance of equipment of the facility. 

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Providing routine assistance in study activities, common technical procedures, and record-keeping responsibilities, following prescribed procedures and instructions, such as: 
  • handling and restraining animals as directed 
  • observing animals regularly, recognizing and reporting changes in eating or drinking habits, and general behavior and outward signs of disease or abnormal in appearance 
  • collecting specimens (such as parasites, blood, or microbiological swabbing’s) for quantification, diagnostic, or environmental control procedures 
  • performing animal identification (such as tattooing or shaving) 
  • recording and/or maintaining animal health data or other data necessary for the operation of the facility or study conduct 
  • Providing basic animal care for study animals, including animals housed under barrier conditions, according to prescribed procedures and instructions, such as: 
  • Feeding and watering animals 
  • transferring animals, equipment, and supplies 
  • grooming, bathing, or exercising animals 
  • observing animals for overt signs of disease 
  • cleaning and sanitation of animal rooms, cages, and facilities 

Qualification, Training and Experience Requirements 

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, a desire to work as a part of a team, and
  • At least 2 years’ relevant experience and demonstration of competency in job role-specific requirements

Physical Requirements 

  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to communicate effectively by talking, listening, reading, and writing in a professional manner as defined by our code of conduct. 
  • At all times, be sober and clear of influence of any substances including alcohol and legal recreational drugs, which may affect the ability of user, safety of animals and other staff members, and work quality in any manner. 
  • Ability to maneuver 50 pounds regularly, while maintaining balance on uneven terrain, confined spaces, or on wet and slippery surfaces 
  • Ability to safely climb ladders and step stools while carrying up to 40 pounds. 
  • Ability to work the duration of an eight-hour shift, on your feet, in constant motion. 
  • Comply with any pertinent local legislative requirements and any additional physical requirements as determined by the Occupational Risk Evaluation Profile for the position. 

Work Environment 

  • The employee is required to:
  • work in an office / laboratory / outdoor environment.
  • interact with and handle animals.
  • be available and work during normal work hours as well as after-hours according to pre-arranged departmental schedules that may require evening, weekend, and public holiday work. 

Compliance Requirements 

  • Perform duties according to quality guidelines (e.g., GCP/GLP as relevant), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions (WIs), and in line with the relevant study protocols or study plans. 
  • Perform duties in compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. 
  • Observe occupational health and safety regulations and comply with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements as required for the position.
  • Identify, record and report incidents, maintenance faults and issues impacting animal welfare, biosafety, and study conduct. 
  • Work outcomes and behaviour should be in accordance with company and departmental standards as well as values and ethics. Continuous evaluation and/or assessment may be used to determine compliance thereto. 
  • Meet continuous professional development requirements, if relevant, inclusive of registration and points requirements with the relevant council, institutions, etcetera 
  • Continuous training, development and supervision are mandatory to comply with company policies, procedures, guidelines, and job role standards.
