SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT: Elementary and Middle Schools

TYPE: Certified  STATUS: Exempt SALARY LEVEL: $95/day (Temporary, No Benefit Package)

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

SUMMARY:

The Certified Substitute position with Educational Services Inc. (ESI) is a staffed employment opportunity in partnership with Somerton School District No. 11. All duties will be performed at the school location(s), but ESI assumes the employer of record responsibility.

The job of Substitute Teacher is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; follow lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues.

Specific Duties/Task Include:

Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.

Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and students for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.

Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.

Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

Models conversation, manners, clean-up activities, listening skills, etc. for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social and interpersonal behavior.

Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. daily report for classroom teacher, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.

Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code and school policies.

Responds to emergency situations (e.g. fights, medical emergency, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.

Supervises students during a variety of activities throughout the day (e.g. lunch area, hallways, auditoriums, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring activities are conducted in an environment with minimal risk of injury to student participants and/or ensuring participants reflect a positive role model for the District.

Supports classroom teachers (e.g. implements lesson plans, etc.) for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED:

Knowledge of the Somerton Elementary School District rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Knowledge of applicable Federal and state laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Knowledge of age/subject appropriate educational materials, curriculum standards, classroom discipline and behavioral management methods.

Knowledge of principles of confidential and regulatory school records and files management practices.

Knowledge of supervisory and training practices and procedures.

Skill in gathering, planning and developing age, ability level, subject specific materials and lesson plans.

Skill in restraining out-of-control students and implementing behavioral modification programs.

Skill in implementing educational curriculum, standards and licensing requirements for assigned program.

Skill in written and oral communications.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting and/or carrying up to 30 pounds. May be required to restrain students with behavioral problems, change clothing and diapers, lift and/or transfer students from wheelchairs to special seating. May be exposed to infectious diseases and body fluid borne pathogens.

Qualifications:

Must possess or eligible to obtain and maintain Arizona Department of Education Teacher Certification or Substitute Certificate.

Valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card.

Proof of immunity to measles (rubeola and rubella) or proof of MMR immunization

Minimum of one (1) year teaching experience and Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
