Somerset County is Hiring a Highway Worker I or Motor Equipment Operator I - Roads Department Near Westover, MD

CLASS TITLE: Highway Worker

DEFINITION:

This is unskilled work in the County Roads Department. An employee in this class under direct supervision of a motor equipment operator or work crew leader performs unskilled work in the maintenance, repair and construction of County Roads and right-of-ways. Performance is evaluated by observation and on-the-spot corrections are made. Periodic conferences with work crew leader are held to discuss progress and performance.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Examples are illustrative only)

  • Cleans drainage ditches and drainage pipes.
  • Picks up refuse off the County Roads and their shoulders.
  • Trims shrubbery around County Roads signs.
  • Roadside grass mowing utilizing 70-HP tractor.
  • Assists with patching, oiling and sweeping of roads.
  • Lays pipe.
  • May be required to put up road signs.
  • Plows snow during emergencies
  • Flags traffic in the absence of a qualified Motor Equipment Operator I.
  • May be required on a temporary basis, to drive a truck, operate a loader, roller, backhoe or chain saw.
  • Cuts and trims bushes and trees to prevent visual obstruction.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of common safety practices.
  • Be willing and able to learn to operate medium and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to pass the departmental physical examination.
  • To operate a power mower.
  • Read, write and understand the English language sufficiently well to comprehend everyday terminology.
  • Must be willing and able to work outside under adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to utilize small hand tools.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

  • Completion of the eighth grade.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • One-year experience at farm or related type labor.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

  • Valid Maryland Driver’s License.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate.
  • Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License.

CLASS TITLE: Motor Equipment Operator I - Roads

DEFINITION:

This is skilled motor equipment operations work. An employee in this class under general supervision of a crew leader or a higher-class Motor Equipment Operator, operates medium weight equipment, performs maintenance work and other duties as required. A mechanic evaluates by observation and through inspection of equipment work. Appropriate supervisors make on-the-spot corrections.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Examples are illustrative only)

  • Operates wheeled and tracked vehicles up to 20 tons, as well chain saw and other tree trimming equipment.
  • Operates four-wheel drive and over five-ton trucks, loaders and power mowers.
  • Hauls personnel, sand, gravel, shale and refuse.
  • Plows snow.
  • Salts and sands roads.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Cuts and trims bushes and trees to prevent visual obstruction.
  • Cleans ditches and culverts with shovel.
  • Flags traffic at construction site.
  • Assists in maintenance of roads.
  • Sweeps intersections.
  • May be required to install road signs and relocate fences when the right-of-way has been changed.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of the operation of trucks with various attachments, tractors with attachments, and front-end loaders and movers.
  • Preventive maintenance for such equipment.
  • Traffic regulations of the State of Maryland.
  • The safe operating limits of the operated equipment.
  • Must be able to maintain the appearance of the assigned vehicle and perform minor maintenance functions such as changing the oil, lubricating, servicing oil and air filters, changing tires, watching oil levels in gear cases and engines, replacing fuses and touching up paint.
  • Must be insufficiently good health so as to be able to work outside under adverse weather conditions and to pass the departmental physical examination.
  • Must be willing and able to adhere to both written and oral instructions.
  • Have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations with fellow workers, supervisors and the public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

  • High school graduate Diploma or GED with one-year experience.
  • Must have experience with vehicles using pedal operated clutch and four speed manual selection, non-synchromesh transmission.
  • Candidates will be tested in the performance and skill in operating motor vehicles equipped with pedal operated clutch and four speed manual selection, non-synchromesh transmission.

REQUIRED LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES:

  • Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License.
